Please join us for Carnival Connection on Sunday, March 27, free at
Miller Outdoor Theatre. The weather looks like it will be excellent.
And remember, you can bring your picnic baskets and beverages to
Hermann Park for theatre events. Be sure to bring family and friends
for this one-of-a-kind event in Houston.

Carnival Connection is the culmination of a series of international
cultural exchange events that share interests in carnival arts and
histories between the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Houston, TX and New
Orleans, Louisiana.

We just completed more than twenty workshops, lectures, exhibits and
film screenings in different regions to share these interests with
overwhelming and enthusiastic attendance. Next year we will add the
Bahamas and possibly Cuba to the schedule of international cultural
exchange activities. And we will provide similar events in Haiti,
Trinidad, Guyana, and West Indian communities of New York and
Washington DC and others in years to come.

With the help of Houston's international consular corps, city
officials, sponsors and volunteers, we will be able to provide great
opportunities to showcase local and international artists. We are
working to build an even more exciting month of activities in Houston
to involve communities from many Caribbean and Latin American
countries, as well as the Gulf Coast.

In Houston we plan to increase the number of programs offered in the
month of March, including citywide events, a festival with even more
live music and dance, and an arts market, in addition to workshops and
talks with international presenters.

There are many ways to help for those who are interested.

Spread the word about the upcoming Carnival Connection event at Miller
Outdoor Theatre to organizations and artists and ask them to email all
their supporters and help bring out a crowd for the event.

And contact us (through the website www.visionforhouston.org, or by
email to ma...@houstonculture.org) about being involved next year. We
plan to build a larger planning committee. Let us know of arts groups
that would like to be involved and the kinds of activities they would
like to help us provide as we build a great series of annual
carnival/carnaval events for Houston.

Below is the information to share with others about the upcoming event
at Miller Outdoor Theatre.

between carnival traditions in the Caribbean, Latin America and the
Gulf Coast. An exciting performance of Dominican folkloric dance and
carnival traditions, and Brazilian samba music by Raices Dominicanas,
Bateria Terceira Costa, JAKS Dance, and Kalunga N'golo will follow a
screening of “Colores del Carnaval Dominicano”, by Rubén Durán and
Donna Pinnick, who have documented carnival traditions in the
Dominican Republic for the past three years.

Carnival Connection at Miller Outdoor Theatre on March 27, 2011 is the
culmination of a series of related cultural exchange events, lectures
and workshops presented by artisans, musicians, dancers, filmmakers
and folklorists. It is organized by Houston Institute for Culture with
the support of the City of Houston, Houston Community College-Central
Campus, Texas Commission on the Arts and National Endowment for the
Arts.

Carnival Connection (Conexión Carnaval) will grow over the next few
years in Houston to be an exciting international series of events for
all Houstonians. The educational and fun events will involve many
local and international carnival organizations in its planning over
the years. By presenting the many diverse carnival traditions of the
Caribbean, Latin America and the Gulf Coast, Carnival Connection will
represent the international interests of the city and its people,
while bringing large number of artists and visitors to Houston in the
month of March. Learn more at www.houstonculture.org.
