CARNIVAL CONNECTION explores the customs and historic relationships
between carnival traditions in the Caribbean, Latin America and the
Gulf Coast. In March 2012, Carnival Connection will present a series
of lectures, workshops, films, photography, and carnival costume and
mask exhibits in Houston, Texas, Port Arthur, Texas and New Orleans,
Louisiana. There will additionally be cultural exchange field trips,
and radio programs and interviews with carnival participants and
experts.
Carnival Connection is produced by Houston Institute for Culture with
the support of the Houston Museum of Culture, National Endowment for
the Arts, Texas Commission on the Arts and the City of Houston through
the Houston Arts Alliance.
PRESENTERS INCLUDE:
Dagoberto Tejeda Ortiz, Ph.D. has taught for 30 years at the
Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo and he is the director of the
Dominican Institute of Folklore. As the leading expert on carnival
traditions of Santo Domingo, he is widely published, including Los
carnavales del carnival, Calendario Folklórico Dominicano, and Atlas
folklórico de la República Dominicana.
Lynne Guitar, Ph.D. is Resident Director of the Council on
International Educational Exchange at PUCMM (Pontifica Universidad
Católica Madre y Maestra) in Santiago and one of the foremost
historians of the Dominican Republic. Dr. Guitar earned her Ph.D. from
Vanderbilt University while also being a Fulbright Fellow in the
Dominican Republic.
Mariano Hernández is a multiple award-winning Latin America carnaval
photographer who has had recent exhibits around the world including
Mexico, Chile, and Europe.
Melvin Marte is an award-winning carnaval mask maker in the Dominican Republic.
