We've been very busy setting up in our new East End location and
looking forward to an extremely active year in 2009. But we want you
to be aware of several activities going on in our East End Galley this
weekend.

Saturday is a great day to drop in. We will have both our gallery
space and studio/recording center open to visitors from Noon to
4:00pm.

It will be a great opportunity to find out more about what we do and
how to get involved. You can earn about our plans for the city-wide
celebration of Juneteenth this summer. Find out about events we plan
to offer, including the World Matters Film Festival and East End
Cultural Arts Festival on the Tlaquepaque Plaza. Probably the best
reason to come by this Saturday is to see the spaces we have opened
and the great possibilities the Tlaquepaque Plaza offers. This is a
great place for artists and non-profit organizations to hold book
signings, film festivals, music showcases and other topical events.

This is also a great opportunity to learn about upcoming projects of
the Digital Story Resource Center. Tlaquepaque Plaza is now home to a
pilot project office of the center, 720-A Telephone Road. It will be
the launching pad for many community documentary and public history
projects. Brief descriptions are posted on line:
http://www.digitalstory.org

Our main site, the gallery and community meeting space at 708-B
Telephone Road, will have the work of a painter from Puebla, Mexico
and an exhibit about the Virgen de Guadalupe, both sponsored by Museo
Guadalupe Aztlan.

And there is quite a lot going on in the area: The East End Urban
Market [http://www.eastendurbanmarket.com], which features great
handmade furniture, art and decorative items from Mexico, will be open
from 9:00am to 4:00pm. And there will be live music at Bohemeo's
[http://www.bohemeos.com]. Bohemeo's will feature Carrie Ann and the
Apocolyptics during the day and Flaming Hellcats in the evening.

Kanomwan Thai Restaurant, a great hidden gem on the plaza, is open
again. The owners have successfully returned from Thailand. Many Thai
food lovers are thrilled by their return and the restaurant's
reopening.

Be sure to drop by from Noon to 4:00pm. Houston Institute for Culture
is located on the Tlaquepaque Plaza at Telephone and Lockwood. It's
about two miles east of downtown and less than a mile north of
University of Houston.

The State of Grass Roots Movements in Mexico

Later on Saturday night, Mariano Elias, a professor of the Universidad
Obrera de Mexico will present an analysis of the situation of grass
roots movements in Mexico and the impact of the economic situation in
the United States on them. Besides working for years in the academic
area, he is a community organizer who sees closely the concern of the
working class for their uncertain future. On his visit from Mexico, he
also hopes to collect the impressions of the American community toward
the new American administration.
