New Orleans Hustlers Brass Band meets Mariachi MECA in a rare
cross-cultural showcase and friendly competition.

7:00pm, Monday, February 16, 2009
Houston Institute for Culture
708-B Telephone Road
Houston, Texas 77023

Enjoy an early evening of spirited musical exchange between the New
Orleans Hustlers Brass Band and the Mariachi MECA professional
ensemble. The music of two different communities come together to
share the stage and the spotlight, exploring very different styles of
music that display an affection for the power of brass instruments as
a centerpiece for their sound. The rollicking fun and the sheer
pleasure of mariachi and brass band music will make this event a great
family outing. Join us for a lively and friendly battle of the BIG
BRASS!

To kick the program off, selected members of each ensemble will
participate in a short roundtable about each style of music,
describing the history and cultural importance of the music. Visiting
University of Houston scholar and ethnomusicologist Steve Azcona and
folklorist Pat Jasper will moderate.

The New Orleans Hustlers Brass Band is made up of a group of
Houstonians who evacuated for Katrina in 2005 and have remained in the
city since. Many of the members still return to tour and play music
with noted brass bands in New Orleans every weekend, like the widely
popular Soul Rebels. The New Orleans Hustlers is made up entirely of
Houston residents, though they maintain the name New Orleans Hustlers
in homage to the source of their tradition. The Mariachi MECA
professional ensemble is comprised of musicians who serve as teachers
in the MECA program and who are therefore actively preserving and
passing the music on to a younger generation.

Big Brass Bravo! is a part of the "Houston Meet Houston" Music Project
sponsored by the Houston Institute for Culture. Big Brass Bravo! is
presented in cooperation with MECA (Multicultural Education and
Counseling through Arts) and the University of Houston Center for
Mexican American Studies. It is funded in part by the National
Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts and the
Houston Arts Alliance.

The event will take place free of charge at Houston Institute for
Culture, located near the corner of Telephone and Lockwood, just two
miles east of downtown and less than one mile north of University of
Houston. Houston Institute for Culture is located in the Tlaquepaque
Market, along with Bohemeo's, Kanomwan Thai Restaurant and East End
Urban Market.
