Houston Monthly
6:00 - 8:00pm, Tuesday, April 14, 2009

Drop by Houston Institute for Culture for an informal open house and
to see the current exhibit by artist Victor Zambrano. Viewers will
find the exhibit of more than 40 human plaster casts on multi-colored
panels, suspended from the ceiling and arranged as a labyrinth, very
interesting and a little surreal. It's a rare opportunity to see an
installation this unique. It's certainly not your usual art
experience. You might even want to bring your camera.

Haiti Counts Young Founder Reaches for Her Goals

Sophia, a student who started out in our youth program, has formed an
organization to benefit children in her home country of Haiti. She
went with a group from Houston Institute for Culture to be interviewed
on the KPFT radio program Self Determination two weeks ago. Here is
her account:

Before I left the house to go on the interview, I picked one of my
best clothes, because it was a big deal for me to promote Haiti
Counts. I wasn't nervous at all during the 30 minute drive to downtown
Houston, but when me and my dad got there 15 minutes early, I tried to
not panic, as this was my 2nd radio interview. My dad was no help, he
was just making it worst, "Camera Recording" it. When we decided to go
in, I had the chance to meet Mr. Al Green, the Congressman from
Houston. It was 9:15 already, and Mr. Al Green was being interviewed.
Patiently waiting in a room with my dad and 2 other girls I felt no
pressure. When it was 10:00 pm, we got called in the room where we
were going to be interviewed. Sitting down, waiting for the commercial
to end, my heart started to pound way too fast, I was really nervous.
The interviewer was very nice, he made me feel comfortable. Within
25minutes of the interview, I lost my nervosity. We talked about teen
pregnancy, poor countries, and of course, Haiti Counts. After the
interview, I got a lot of positive feedback from the interviewer and
his co-host. They definitely were looking forward on my project, and
were amazed on what a 14 year old can do when she puts her mind to it.

Sophia's cause Haiti Counts has raised more than $300 on Facebook.
