Pakistan Publications Inc. Hosted Foreign Office Journalists from Twenty-Five Countries

Houston (March 17, 2007): U.S. Embassies across the world have staff that deals with media. These personnel have journalism background and they are usually born in the same country, where they are placed.

Recently the Institute of International Education (IIE) hosted a delegation of journalists from Twenty-Five (25) U.S. Embassies across the globe, including Pakistan, Nepal, Turkey, Tunisia, and so on. IIE is an independent nonprofit organization founded in 1919. IIE is among the world’s largest and most experienced international education and training organizations.

During their tour of Houston Texas, IIE chose Pakistan Publications Inc. (PPI), which brings out Weeklies Pakistan Chronicle and Pakistan Journal and Daily Houston Chronicle as the two media outlets for these journalists to study.

Tariq Nehal Khan, who is the Founder and CEO of PPI, hosted sumptuous lunch for the delegation at Shahnai Restaurant. Present of the occasion were two of IIE Staff members from D.C. and Paul Cummings Manager of IIE’s IVLP program here in Houston. Other than Tariq Nehal Khan, PPI was represented by Mahtalat Abbasi, Editor-in-Chief; Afsara Shaikh, Layout Manager; Jamil Siddiqui, Director of Marketing and ILyas Hasan Choudry, Reporter for the Weekly Pakistan Chronicle Newspaper.

Tariq Khan thanked IIE for choosing PPI in Houston as the only community based newspaper for this study tour and gave the history of the First Pakistani American Bilingual Newspaper Weekly Pakistan Chronicle which PPI started to publish in 1999. Idea was to bring positive news and promote the image of the people of the community. This media provided as an excellent conduit for the introduction of products and services of several businesses to the most affluent Pakistan and Indian Community. Due to close proximity of Pakistan and India, this newspaper coming out of nine states of USA and one province of Canada, is read by people from both the Pakistani and Indian communities

Tariq Khan explained that when it comes to specific countries news information and articles, the community newspapers like Weekly Pakistan Chronicle do a better job like reporting and analyzing the events happening in South Asia than many other mainstream media outlets. He added that the newspaper reaches to the desks of various politicians, decision makers, secretaries of states, libraries and other public locations, which is evident from the fact that when these entities want their message to reach to grassroots levels, they use our publications of Pakistan Chronicle and Pakistan Journal.

Tariq Khan further informed that since PPI offers Free Pick-Up from hundreds of locations, the newspaper is read by many communities. That has given opportunity to PPI to be instrumental in creating awareness among Pakistani, Indian and other communities about issues affecting us today of Immigration, Health, Education, National Security, Public Participation in Voting and so on. Many Pakistanis and Indians have aspired for political offices and we have the first Pakistani City Councilman in Houston and one more person is aspiring for it in November 2007 and if one goes back in history to see from where the awareness of created, one will indeed find that PPI has as well contributed positively in these endeavors.
