Anyone remember Grego the dj on "outlaw radio" in the early 90's on KLOL
101? I remember that he was a great dj, but he kind of was fired or quit
under hush-hush circumstances. Whatever happened to Grego? I think his
name was Greg Onofrio or Greg D'Onofrio. I hear that KLOL has a morning guy
named grego, is it the same guy? The guy lots too young to be the same
Grego. Thanks for any input.

Grego was on the Morning show until Yesterday. He -- Along with the
rest of the morning show were fired for some reason. If anyone knows
why, let me know.

how hard is it to be a d.j. ? especially at KLOL!!!, hell, all you need to know
is how to pronounce ZZ Top, Aerowsmith, AC/DC , and Led Zeppelin.... Come on,
klol sucks! the format sucks and the morning show is still featuring the same
stupid crap from 15 years ago... the mindless drivell on klol appeals to those
who never developed past the age of 16...the reason klol sucks is this: it's
utterly predictable and tired.

p.s., it would figure that Jordan Mills likes this sorry excuse for a radio
station.

KLOL as itself is okay. Clear Channel (AKA American Radio) is what sucks.
They came and took over 107.5 cum 94.5, 101.1, and several others. They
USED to be good. I've talked with a few DJ's and they pretty much hate how
things are. One of them told me "I'm just a monkey, all I do is push the
button for the next song and read the title."

They play what the labels pay them to play. I can magically tell you who is
going to go on tour or release a new album a few months before it's
announced, simply by listening for one-hit-wonders from a couple of years
ago. When they start replaying stuff that probably shouldn't have been
played again, it means Group X is going to come out with a new, "more
mature" album. They play old stuff that doesn't really belong on the
station, someone is going on tour. It's all about money now.

Support community radio, before it shrivels up and dies . . . oh . . . never
mind, too late.

Yep...you got it....as a former employee of Cheap Channel,
I can say; you are correct sir!!! Jocks are not allowed to
be what they used to be; Entertainers...they are now robots or
puppets...BTW in Dallas, which is market #6 in US radio,
Cheap Channel puts folks on at night who have NO radio experience
whatsoever....they are good off air in production...but hey, I
was jocking 25 years ago in Beaumont and can probably do a better
job...oh wait, they would have to PAY me more.....they also
work to death production people ; fire a great morning show
and bring in Bob and Tom...which CC owns...via satellite and
watch the numbers tumble...(this happened on 92.5 the Classic
Rock station in Dallas...wouldnt surprise me if they do it on
the Arrow as well..)

of course I used to be an engineer for Cheap Channel...but thanks
to a GM who didnt like me and wanted to reduce my pay among
other things, he found a way through a lie to get rid of me...
too bad the Texas Workforce Commission didnt believe him..
I got unemployment...and CC will get taxed more next year..
and my former position is being offered at about 20K less than
what I was being paid......oh well.....welcome to corporate
radio....THEY know what is good for YOU!!! ;)
Thats ok....I got a job that pays me by the hour again...and a
nice work enviroment with less stress and great people...
no more pages in the middle of the night from the transmitters,
no more DJs or board ops calling me screaming because something
doesnt work right....then to find out they or someone else pushed
a button in that they shouldnt have, no more egos or politics to
deal with......and no more lies!!! I was promised a lot when I went
to work there....Only thing I got was the cash and pay raise...
all the training and the assistant I was promised NEVER came true..

I don't get it... I quit listening to S&P years ago, but I DID listen to
them regularly when I was in my teens and early 20s, which is the demo
they're after. (Anyone else remember Joe Walsh's numerous and very funny
drunken rants on KLOL in the early 1980s?) In that demo S&P always
scored big. So why is Clear Channel fu**ing up a radio station that
served its niche better than any other medium? KLOL had the Three A's
market (alcohol, ass, AC/DC) locked up.

I've listened periodically since Stevens left (or was booted) off the
show due to Clear Channel, and while Stevens was a toupee-wearing dick,
the show was a LOT funnier when it was S&P instead of "Greggo and
Pruitt". Greggo was never funny (the guy's a good DJ, not a comic),
Pruitt lost it when his partner left, and Shannon aka Boner is funnier
as a side character. Shannon moved his Boner character into the
forefront after Stevens left, and the phony Mexican thing is only funny
in small doses. (To give him credit, I've been at the station on Friday
mornings with some local bands and he has ALWAYS been good to musicians
during those appearances, both on the air and off.) Locke is a great
guy, too - very sincere, goofy, and genuinely happy to meet people.

I'm not totally against Clear Channel - I think they've made 950 KPRC
far more interesting (not to mention fun, except for that lame-ass Pat
Grey guy), but the rest of the stuff they've done on the other stations
flat-out sucks. I listen to Chris Baker for an hour or two and Phil
Hendrie when he's not pre-empted by the friggin' Rockets. Other than
that, I quit listening to all Clear Channel "properties."

Prediction #1: They'll bring in Stern for KLOL, especially if he's a
Clear Channel "property," only 3+ years past Howie's prime.
Prediction #2: Clear Channel will be forced to sell many radio stations
due to the vast amount of debt they've accrued while purchasing all of
these radio station.
Prediction #3: Look for a low-rated, non-Clear Channel FM station to
change formats and hire on S&P.

Also an option:
Houston is the only city without Fox Sports Radio, which is a Clear Channel

Stern is with Infinity Broadcasting / CBS. Not sure how clear-channel
fits into that but I really wish they'd bring him onto KLOL. I
haven't been able to listen to him since I moved from Dallas so I
can't comment on the "3+ years past prime" comment - perhaps.

Regardless, I'd listen because he's a hell of a lot more interesting
than anything else I've heard around here. Too many people judge the
quality of the radio show without ever hearing it- they just see the
tv show and think that is the radio show. There is a world of
difference and sometimes when Stern is editing his own comment, he
seems to try to pick the more outrageous stuff which isn't always the
funniest/most interesting stuff. The radio show is much more raw
without the hand-picked bits like the tv shows have.

Moby is in Atlanta, and one of the top country DJ's in the US. John
Matthews is doing mornings in Hawaii.

95.7 KIKK is owned by Infinity (I believe) and they are under a "format flip watch" according to
the radio houston website (http://radiohouston.cjb.net). The option *could* be a
Hot Talk format OR if KLOL does go to Fox Sports, the new Rock station in Houston???
That could be why they dumped our beloved local morning show on KLOL,
they would probably be beaten by Stern (and you KNOW Clear Channel doesn't want to look bad).

Who knows nowadays.

With 97.5 and 103.7 moving in to the Houston market with Cumulus at the helm, Houston radio should be
getting interesting.

No, FOX Sports is NOT a Clear Channel family member...it is
a family member of FOX / News Corp...NOT CC...
You are thinking Premiere radio which IS part of Cheap Channel

(I was the xmtr eng for 1190 FOX Sports in Dallas...the
station itself was owned by CC but they are NOT the same family!)

Also, Stern is a CBS/Infinity/Viacom property...he is back in
Dallas ONLY because CBS took lowrated 105.3 KYNG (the poor
YOUNG Country!) and made it a HOT FM Talk station....
and Stern was brought on since it fits his style...
As for CC selling, dont bet on it...true their debt load caused their
stock to plument recently....this years earnings are pathetic
compared to last year's...BUT the current FCC with Powell in charge
and being PRO broadcaster will probably ease up on the limits
one company can own even more!! This would allow CC to gobble up
more stations in one market....(of course if they continue to hurt
they may sell some of the less profitable ones....BUT I doubt it!
They paid 18 MILLION for 1190 AM in Dallas....it wasnt worth that
and if they try to look at a ROI (Return Of Investment), it will
take them 30+ years to recoup that with the billing on that
station.....
Last prediction...about another station picking up S&P???
Maybe BUT look at the current situation...
Classic Rock, Modern ROck and Rock...all owned by CC..
Oldies and 80s owned by Cox (107.5 and 106.9)....MAYBE the Point
would be a spot for S&P....COX is known for stealing CC morning
teams...but after 25+ years, is S&P old and tried?? I have tapes
of when they were first S&P AFTER leaving 610 KILT in its Top40
days and they were H&H there!!! (This was back in the early 80s)..
A lot of the skits they did then, they were STILL doing 20yrs later!
Im surprised they didnt try to revive StarTrots! (I have hours of
tapes on those :)
The rest of the stations? Hispanic or Latino....unless 107.9 Eldorado
gets some cash, they may have to sell...but you can bet someone like
Liberman (who bought 98.5 and ruined a good format on it!) or MAYBE
Hispanic might buy them if they start to go under..of course COX can
buy another station I think in the market...we can only hope..
Also Susquehanna who owns 104 is free to buy but they have not seen
a good return from their radio properties lately...they spent a ton
of money upgrading their 93.3 in Dallas...and the numebrs still stink
(IF I were them, I would blow out the MERGE crappy format and put
a Classic HITS format on it...like 98.5 was doing...GOOD format
for rim shot station anyway....the Hispanic community in Houston
is on the wrong side of town for that station..and 107.9 and 100.7..
all on the Devers CC owned tower....with a high concentration of
anglo yuppies on the NE and N side, a classic hits station would be
best for any of them...and probably pull better numbers..besides
they would also pull from their LICENSED cities of Bmt, Pt Arthur
and Winnie.....give me a break...a cotton or rice farmer in Winnie
dont need no damn DANCE music station licensed to that area!)

Moby is in Atlanta on 96.7 I think...being a country DJ!!!
(dont know what happened to Matthews)
ABC Radio (who owns or owned the station there) had him syndicated
through their ABC Radio Networks/SMN system for a while..he even
did his show once in Dallas from the old Z ROCK studios!! But he
lost numbers and stations dropped him...when he got below 10,
ABC decided to drop his syndication...BOY has he lost weight!!
and the beard is getting GREY!! :)
Damn nice guy though.....I got one of his billboard signs which
says "Moby in the Morning" from ABC

Used to be a staff engineer there before working for Cheap Channel

CC thinks they own radio....the attitude at the DFW cluster has
gone downhill in the last 2 years after CC came and bought Jacor and
then the AMFM merger.....when I went to work at the stations while
under Jacor, it was fun....but when CC moved in, the PD left, the GM
left, a new PD and GM came in and the place went to hell...
more hours, less people, using the WRONG people in certain areas merely
because they suck up to the big bosses, discriminating against
lower employees who dont suck up but still try to do a good job, etc.
I still have friends working at CC and hold nothing against them
but the corporate mentality and the management direction has gone
downhill...(Of course a former AMFM GM in Dallas who was banging
his 21yr old receptionist in his office after parties and stealing the
prize closet empty was a real winner too from what I heard!)

AMEN to that!!! It will be awhile before Cumulus gets 103.7 in
the Houston main area....look for a mnor upgrade soon but it will
be more than a year before they become a full C licensed to LaPorte
(and owned by Cumulus....Ben Amonte in Conroe isnt ready to give
up 103.7 yet but he will when the cash is right :)

I knew that they weren't 'owned' by CC, but they do a lot of business together in
many cites. I certainly have no inside info or anything like that, but I know
that Fox Sports IS on in nearly every large city except Houston. And since 610 is
nearly all local, there is room for a syndicated all-sports station in Houston.
Heck, as you know, there are now 3 sports stations in DFW-a year and a half ago,
there was but one local-1310AM.
Is 1190 doing well? I know ESPN came on the air, but to me, they are lame.
Also, can you tell mewhy nearly every station in the world broadcastover the net
EXCEPT any CBS-owned station? It is going to kill me next year when the Texans
start playing, with no access to their flagship-KILT 610? Thanks.

I will tell you right now S&P will never team back up.

Pruitt's wife has told him she does not want him to go back to radio,
Jim is retired and even if he were not he would not be teaming back up
with Mark.

Cheap Channel will bring in one of their own morning shows from
another market.

Look for Dean and Rodge to go byby as well.

Clear Channel was stupid, the real man show had pulled it's self up
from 9th to 3rd in the ratings they woulc never be number one as that
position belongs to oneo f the hispanic stations and has for the last
two or three years.

I agree with another poster I no longer listen to cheap channel

Clear Channel is turning radio stations into cookie cutter copies. And, they
operate with a very heavy hand. You're here today, and gone in a flash, no
matter how valuable you are to the many thousands who regularly listen to
you.

I believe C.C. will sell out within five years. They seem to be posturing
