I've been away from Houston for years, and just wondered if any of
these folks have gone to that Big Bar-B-Q in the Sky:

* Leon Hale - He was old when I was born, and was always bitching
about his blood pressure. One pork chop too many?

* Marvin Zindler - He'd been essentially held together by staples and
sutures since about 1980.

* Dave Ward - Still "bottoms up"...or six feet down?

* Paul Berlin - Seems like his mind began to pick up static around
1990.

* Mattress Mac - A comparatively young guy, but so gonzo that I have
to wonder...

* Carolyn Farb - I mean, who could tell how old she really was?

Speaking of which, what's with those blue glasses that Marvin Zindler
wears? Does he need them for some kind of eye problem, or does he just
have a very strange sense of fashion?

He just has a strange sense of fashion. He's been dressing outlandishly
since the early 1970s. His son Mark taught one of my Radio & TV classes
up at SFASU in the late 1980s. He's a spitting image of his father, sans
wig and goofy clothes, and shave off 30 years.

The funny thing is, as bigger than life that Marvin seems - at least a
royal pain in the backside, you'd think he was a bigger fella. Fact is,
he's frail and small in stature. I was amazed when he came to my
nursing home and threatened me with his "expose" tactics when we had a
"good" nursing home story...

You know what I'd like to find out... whatever happened to Alan

It covers up the wrinkles around his eyes. He's had lots of facelifts
but they can only do so much.

The white wig he wears covers up his bald head.

Does anyone know if Dave Ward still hangs out at Kay's every night after

the bar, get a beer and fire up a cigar. Like clockwork. He would also
have a honey with him.

I heard that 13 made him dry out. Funny thing is, in spite of all the

"Rude, foul-tempered" was the assumed persona. He really is much
closer to the jolly type, from what I've read about him. He grew
tired of the radio act and was much happier doing the TV bits.

He's had his nose and chin fixed, and I can't remember what else.
Back when he worked on the Houston Press (Houston's third newspaper
until 1965 or so, not the current tabloid of the same name.), he got
his first nose job, or so my mother told me. People at the paper
teased him but he just ignored it and persevered covering the crime
scene, riding with the local peace officers to wherever the action
was. He later joined the sheriff's office, as a deputy I believe.

Some say it was those early years that shaped his deep opposition to
prostitution. He say how badly the women fared in that profession,
and spent much time and effort thereafter trying to keep young women
from starting down that path. That's one of the reasons he campaigned
to close down the Chicken Ranch
http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/CC/ysc1.html
in La Grange. His argument was that prostitution rarely exists
illegally with out being accompanied by other forms of crime, not the
least of which were coercion, threats and intimidation directed
towards the prostitutes by their exploiters.
That isn't always the case these days, especially where legal
sanctions have been removed,
http://www.wondersmith.com/bordel/chicken.htm
but it often was back then.

Many of you might remember when the six and a half foot tall T.J.
Flournoy, called "sheriff Jim" as I recall, knocked the rather
diminutive Marvin into a fountain in near the Fayette county court
house. I believe he took Marvin's toupee and stomped on it shortly
there after.
http://www.gc-magazine.com/issues/99/chickenranch.html
Burt Reynolds played sheriff Jim in the silly movie "Best Little
Whorehouse in Texas (1982)" based loosely on the story of the closing
of the real Chicken Ranch. Dom DeLuise played the Marvin Zindler
character. http://us.imdb.com/Title?0083642 In this case, the truth
is a far better story than the movie and both actors are very far from
the mark in their portrayals.

I remember being home sick from jr. high school and hearing people
call into Alvin's show to say whether they liked dogs or cats better
and why. Alvin made wise cracks and seemed to have offended someone
who called up and screamed at him, "I don't like cats, you bony headed
niggah!" Poor Alvin was nonplussed, but recovered somewhat and said,
"Well, there are a lot of crazy people out there, and that was one of
them!" Still, the call seemed to have quite caught him off guard. As
he is white, I guess he'd never been called that particular stream of
names before.

I like the time he went to the airport to interview the solicitors who
harangue you for money for what they claim to be good causes. Seems
that they were so proud of what they were doing that they hid under

Did you read one of the Web links or something? <BSG> If not,
they're kind of fun, say the same thing and then some. For example,
sheriff Jim used intelligence gathered from the Chicken Ranch to solve
almost every major crime in the county for over 30 years. Not an
uncommon tactic, really, and perhaps a good argument for having such
establishments on speaking terms with the law.

He also published Best Little Whorehouse as a magazine article in, I

I read it as collected in his anthology of previously published work

Have you ever seen his business card? It's actually a color picture of him
sitting at the KTRK anchor desk with Mickey Mouse.

Too funny.

Have you ever been so board that you actually changed the channel and watched a few
minutes of what is going on over at Ch 11?

Ever seen their news?

I understand AA, or Affirmative Action, but I do not understand what CH 11 is trying to
say to Houston.

I would venture to say that infants can follow their news stories each evening, and if you
just washed up on shore, and can only understand "special english", then Ch 11's news team
is just right for you.

I watch sometimes thinking the Jesse Jackson will drop in one night and do the news!

What a place!

Speaking of nice folks, I read this morning that Larry Sachnowitz died
yesterday. His ad agency has done "pro bono" work for a lot of Houston
not-for-profits for years... even back to the late 60's when he had Gulf
States Advertising. Hell of a talented and good person. At 61, it's too
bad Houston (and his family) lost him.

As long as idiots like you are politically active, *every* election is
one to worry about -- last November proved that.

Nah, there simply aren't that many of us Democrats.

For what ever it's worth, I met a native houstonian about the same age
as Marvin and he said he knew Marvin ever since they were kids. He
told me that he never liked Marvin that much because Marvin was always
trying to be the center of attraction. Further, this man knew a lot
of the who's who in Houston based on his stories. He was very
interesting to listen to regarding Houston in the early days.

Can you reference this? I find the idea that Jim Flournoy would
sanction any significant use of illegal drugs hard to accept. He was
one of the most popular lawmen in the state, and as such, an
indictment of him would seem to blacken Texas law enforcement as a
whole. Please advise, as I am very interested.

OK, there is truth in what you say, and more than a little. But Marvin
does do some good from time to time, in spite of his rather bizarre
need for attention. If you think about it, what reasonable person
would want to be a crusader anyway? :)

I don't know, but I was with the sound company that did 2 of her
local shows. She was surprised that she could actually hear her
monitors. That is what they are used for.....

When she showed up to do a sound check, I was admiring her butt. She
was wearing really short cut-offs and a crop top. Fortunately, my wife
was not there. :-)

Reported in newspapers and on TV. Look it up for yourself. It was
statewide scandal not limited to Fayette County. Did you really think
Zindler would get all excited about a backwoods whore house patronized
by red necks and college children.

Jack, I did not know that. I think he is a peach. His mellow voice has
been in this town as long as I can remember. I still have memories of my
Momma putting wood wax on our hardwood floors and his show being on in the
background (that would have been about 1962 or so).

A & S,

I first met Paul in the 1950's when I would walk down to Caroline from my
Aunt's house on Wheeler St. and peer into the broadcast studio where he
worked . I with him later when I worked for K-NUZ and K-QUE in the early
'70s. He and Webb Hunt are really nice folks. Anyway, he was VERY well
paid there.
