List of Houston Bookstores

I'm encouraged by the responses so far--I might actually be able to pull
this together, if I continue to get enough help. Thanks to all who have

Greetings, all.
Is anyone out there interested in putting together a list of bookstores in
the Houston area? The inspiration for this project is the pair of lists
that appear regularly in rec.arts.books (and news.answers):

Thus, I'd like to put together a list that could be posted to these
newsgroups. But also, I'm curious to see just what a Houston list would be
like, and to learn more about the bookstores in Houston.
Now, I've lived for five and a half years in this city, so I know about
some of the major places to go for books--Book Stop, Half-Price, etc. And
I also know about some of the smaller booksellers in my neck of the woods,
the Clear Lake area--Jeremy's Bookshelf, Ellen's Bookrack, etc. But I'm
the sort of person who finds a few good places for books, and goes to them
frequently, rather than one who seeks out and visits ALL the stores. So
there's some rather large gaps in my knowledge (and that's one of the
reasons I'd like to see a Houston list).
So why do I need your help, when I could just open the phone book?
Comments. A list like this would be of little use if it were merely a list
of names and addresses--it would be little more than an excerpt of the
yellow pages. So I need *comments*. Impressions. Likes, dislikes. Was
the selection large? Small? Were the staff helpful? Rude? Indifferent?
Therefore, I'm hoping that the Houston Unix/Usenet community, being a
literate and well-read crowd will react enthusiastically to my call and
flood my mailbox with the names and descriptions of their favorite book
stores.
A little bit more detail about what I need from you:
For each bookstore:
Name and address. The address needn't be a mailing address--just enough
to find the store. For example: "Clear Lake, in the
shopping center at Bay Area Blvd. and Space Center."
For stores outside the loop, a community reference would
be helpful: "West Houston", "Sugarland", "Katy"
Categorical Info. Are the books new? used? both? (For used bookstores, it
would also be helpful to know whether the store has a
trading policy or is strictly a reseller.)
Is it a specialty bookstore? Sci-Fi, mystery, technical,
religous, etc. For example: "Murder by the Book sells
mysteries of all sorts."
Does the store sell rare books or first-editions?
Does the store have any other distinguishing
characteristics? "Jeremy's sell all types of books, but
also has a large selection of children's books."
"FooBar's also carries a wide variety of alternative
press magazines and newspapers."
Comments. What do you think of the store, and why? Please try to
make at least one comment about selection--is the store
likely to have all of the titles by one's favorite
author, or just a few?
Send negative comments as well, where they apply. Being
able to steer people clear of "bad" stores is as
important as helping them find the "good" ones.
Don't hesitate to send comments about the larger,
well-known stores as well. Your opinions of the Book
Stop are likely to differ from mine, and I'd like the
list to present balanced comments. (If you're
contributing a review of a chain bookstore, don't
forget to note which location you're reviewing.)
I'd prefer that you email directly to me, but posting in houston.general
is OK. I'll collect, colate, and edit the responses; when I've got enough
of a list, I'll post a proto version for review.
