Hi all-

I am about to change cell phone services, and I thought a
little input from others may help me find the best compnay for service
in central Houston. I have a Nextel phone which overall has pretty
good service except for some gaping holes in coverage in areas that I
travel a lot (San Felipe between RO boulevard and the railroad tracks,
59 just inside the loop to name two). Repeated calls to the company
have not led to repair of htese holes.

A friend of mine has Sprint, but he doesn't seem to have good
coverage in the Rice Village area, another area I frequent. I know
Cingular is about to go belly-up, so that leaves verizon and ATT.

Any input??

thanks

I agree about the probs with Sprint. It's terrible around Allen Pkwy/Waugh,
too. Sprint was so bad on inner Loop coverage that I dumped it and got on
Verizon. Not perfect but far better than Sprint.

Why do you think Cingular is going belly-up? They are one of the few
profitable cell companies. If I changed carriers I would probably switch to
Cingular based on feedback from all the people I know who use it.

I used to grumble about Sprint every single day when I had a Samsung phone.
On average I'd only get about 50% of my incoming calls, the rest always
rolled directly over to voice mail. My girlfriend still has a Samsung and
her coverage area sucks and her phone doesn't always ring either.

I was ready to dump Sprint, pay the contract termination fee and switch when
I was talked into trying another phone... I've since tried two and my cell
experience with Sprint is 100% different. I currently use the Sanyo 6200
(its wafer thin) and I get ALL of my calls, I have yet to miss an incoming
call. Prior to getting the Sanyo, I had a Qualcomm 2255 for about a week
and it had great coverage reception also, just not the features I wanted.

I guess what I'm saying is that the phone can make as much difference as the
carrier when it comes to coverage and other issues.

They are cutting 7.5% (3000) of their workforce,
but it makes no mention about them doing this as
a way to stay out of bankruptcy (just saving $).

I have never used them, so I cannot comment.
PrimeCo/AT&T has kept me happy for 4+ years.

Folk,

Verizon has the most towers in the Houston Area and Cingular has 2nd most.

That said, if you are using an analog phone some of the towers won't be
available for your system no matter who you have.

I have a tri-mode Nokia phone that works well on the Verizon network nearly
anywhere I go. Been using them for the last 2 years with OK service unless I
had to go into the store where the lines are looooong but the worker bees
are friendly and mostly knowledgeable.

Before that I had Primeco and they were Krap with a capital Turd.

I've never gone out of range in the Houston area - except of course when
I'm on level B2 of the garage at work. When I visited New York City I
was in range. When I was in Connecticut I was in range. Boston was in
range. Western Massachusetts and Upstate New York were in range. `I
went to visit my parents in Maine and didn't start to roam until about
20 miles north of Portland.

I've also noticed that the free long distance on the Sprint phone means
that I pay roughly the same for my landline and my cell combined as I
used to for just the landline when I used it for long distance calls.

Of course I should say that I didn't get the cell phone until only last
year; Sprint is the only cellular provider I've ever been with.

Just a big hunch. According to my sources at Weingarten Realty, every
strip center in Houston which they control (and that is a lot) with a
Cingular store in it has asked to be let out of their lease.

My conclusion is that someone in Cingular management noticed that they

Very possible. They are doing some reorganizing and
they say the sales operations is the initial target.
Maybe they are just consolidating so they can remove
a number of excess sales positions around town?

More complicated than that. ATT was an investor in Houston Cellular,
but they seem to have to gone and done their own thing. Houston
Cellular merged with 2-3 other companies, including BellSouth's
cellular division and somebody else, to come up with Cingular.

Stull informs:

Not by half! Houston Cellular was the local shill for AT&T Wireless in this
market. I was with AT&T Wireless when I lived elsewhere in the state and
when I moved back to Houston, they assured me my contract with 2 months to
run could be transferred to Hou Cellular, their "affiliate" in the Houston
Market. HC wanted me to resign a contract at usurious rates and I jumped
ship with a harsh letter to AT&T.

Houston Cellular stores later became Cingular Stores.

I am apalled at the way cellular service is marketed in this town (4th
largest in the country).

Reminds me of a comedian I heard a few months ago. He heard about
Starbucks opening a store across the street from itself.

He figures that their main customers for this are people with
Alzheimer's. They walk outside, forget where they've been, see
another store, "Hey, let's go have some coffee."

It was more that the traffic wouldn't cut across to the left. The
second store was primarily drive by.

Shepard and West Gray. Two Starbucks across the street from each
other.

Different product - different frequency of purchasing. I never go to
Starbucks but people I know who do go there everyday or at least several
times per week. I have bought 4 cell phones in 5 or 6 years! I doubt that
too many people even buy one per year.

I don't agree with your statement about cingular going belly-up. I have
been using cingular for my treo 180 for 6 months now and have received
excellent service. I would choose cingular over verizon, AT&T and Sprint
any day of the week.

BTW, the treo pda/phone combo is the way to go. If you're like most
people, you'll eventually upgrade to a combo and consolidate, so why not
get service that will compliment you next move?

Actually, both Verizon & Cingular appear to do pretty well in the
Houston area. My wife did have a little trouble this week but I don't
think the intermission of a Lyle & Bonnie concert is a fair trial. I
suspect that all the services were overloaded there.

Nationwide I have come up with one instance where Cingular out performed
Verizon. But it was in the wilds of Virginia S of Charlottesville.

Otherwise both have done fine.
