I haven't been there in about 18 years but it is still sad to see the older
restaurants close up. When it opened it seemed to be the beginning of the
'restaurant along the water' type trend found in other cities but I guess
the lovely Houston Ship Channel wasn't scenic enough.

I'd be sad if the building burned down, but not to see them
close.

I posted a rather long review of them about 2 yrs ago. The
view was breathtaking, the salad was decent, the bar scotch
was bar scotch. But everything else - the entree, the
service, the ambience, the physical state of repair of the
place - was a disappointment.

Here's hoping that somebody with a bit more ambition and
vision opens there within the year!

I agree about the disappointment in the place. I have fond memories
of one summer with a romantic guy. Every Sunday evening we'd go to
Shanghai's and sit on the deck with a small radio, listen to the Big
Band show, eat shrimp and oysters, drink gin and watch the sun
go down. We were often the only ones on the deck. I guess that was
a plus but it's a shame that it would never be a destination for the
food.

I seem to recall hearing that Shanghai Red's was owned by a parent company
called Specialty Restaurants (or something like that). We heard about this
when they built a restaurant on the site of the old Pelican Street Wharf on
Algiers Point in New Orleans, just across the river from Jackson Square.
They had a FANTASTIC location. It was unbelievable sitting in their bar and
watching the sun set behind the French Quarter with all the busy traffic on
the river. Unfortunately, their food achieved monumental heights of
mediocracy. We heard that they had similar GREAT locations in New England,
Houston (Shanghai Reds) and in California - - including a site that gave you
mind boggling views of planes taking off and landing at a major airport. We
also heard that they appear to have their sauces manufactured in 50-gallon
drums at a petrochemical complex, then shipped out to their eateries where
it was slopped on local fish (or whatever) and given a local name.

Algiers Landing didn't survive the oil bust in New Orleans, or maybe trip
across the river on the Canal Street Ferry was too much effort. In any
case, the last time we were there, it was not only closed -- the building
was totally gone.

I have eaten at the old Algiers Landing restaurant, but it has been MANY
years ago. When I first moved to Houston and went to Red's for dinner, the
similarities were hard to miss. Neither place could be recalled for the
food, but the decor and views were similar.

Well. I guess I have no taste at all - the food was great at Brady's last
Sunday. Nothing
was overcooked including the beef - nice and rare for me.

I understand that Brady's is owned by the same bunch. Have had their
brunch several times...Dissapointing is the best thing I can say about
it. I was very impressed at how anyone can get prime rib so tough.
shrimp dishes are all overcooked... the only king crab legs I couldn't
eat because of overcooking. The variety of poorly cooked brunch stuff is
very wide.

I've eaten at Brady's Landing numerous times and it has always been
excellent IMO. I thought that Brady's had a relatively goo rep. here on he.

Hmmmm...must be just me. Maybe I've been on reeeely bad days..The chef
musta been on vacation and they had a veteranarian or librarian standing
in for him. At any rate the omelets are good...You can watch that being
cooked.

I agree that Shanghai's food really went downhill over the years. I remember
going there when I was in high school (early 80's) and the food was delicious.

Now I have a friend who asks to go there every year for her birthday (she seems
to like it) and I go, but I really don't much enjoy the food... and the service
had MUCH to be desired. Seems like the temperature (of the air) was never
right... one time it was waaaay too cold in there... another time really hot...

Did the quality of the food go downhill or did your taste improve? I am
pretty sure it is the latter.

Carey,

You may be right... but I'm from New Orleans and I've ALWAYS liked good food!

The same company owns them both. It's the largest privately owned
restaurant holding company in the U.S. (85 restaurants).
