For the October meeting (I was thinking Wed, October 27th if we can
get a decent turnout) I'd like to put out a call for presentation
topics. These can be either topics you would like to see discussed,
or would like to present. To get the ball rolling I'll list a few
topics I'd be interested in.

* R best practices
* Debugging
* Time series - specifically what are the benefits of each time series
package (ts, zoo, xts, etc.)
* ggplot package
* plyr package
* rmetrics
* regexes

Once we get enough input we can pick a topic or two and figure out who
would be willing to present on it. Unfortunately, I'm going to have
to take myself off the presenter list for October since I may have to
skip the October meeting due to a new baby (my wife is due Nov 1).

Regards,
Ed

I could give a talk on R syntax trickiness (lexical scope and lazy evaluation).

If both Ed and Hadley will be unavailable, do you think we should push
it back to early November?

I'll most likely be at the meeting, I just didn't want to commit to
presenting since I'm not quite sure when the new baby will arrive.

John, that sounds like a great idea for a presentation. Unless anyone
has any objections I say we go with that.

Is this meeting still on? Do we have a time and place?

I'm going to be unable to make the meeting after all. My son was born
this morning so I'm going to be a little busy for the next few days.
If there are enough people interested I would encourage you all to get
together anyway.

Kam, have you managed to set up the room reservation yet?

We had originally planned to have about 10-15 people coming. If you
are planning on attending please reply in the thread so we can get a
headcount.

Hello All,

Ed, congratulations!!!

I have not set up a room since we did not have any confirmation about the meeting and I thought we were considering early November. It shouldn't be a problem to set up a room on campus. As soon as you let me know, I can reserve a room.

Kam

Thanks for all the well wishes!  Everyone is doing fine, my new son is 7 lbs 10 oz and doing great.  My wife is recovering much faster than anyone had anticipated.  We should be back at home by end of the day.

I'm going to be running in and out of the hospital for the rest of the day so I won't be able to check email frequently.

If at least 5 people don't express an interest in meeting tomorrow, let's scrap it until early November. In the meantime, I'll plan on setting up a meetup.com account so that we can coordinate this a little better in the future.
