Thanks to everyone who came out to the Grand Prize Bar last night. I
had a great time and enjoyed the discussions.

Overall, I think everyone agreed that we definitely need to keep the
momentum going. Most of us agreed that a meeting time in October
would be beneficial since most people will be leaving for the holidays
in November and December. We also decided that we would like to have
some sort of technical topic presented at the next meeting. That
means we would probably need to meet at a place with a projector so
that people could display a presentation and/or R scripts. If anyone
has an idea of a workable location, please post to the group.

Also, any ideas for topics that you would be willing to present, or
would like to see presented would be appreciated. We have a wide
range of skill levels and familiarity with both statistics and R, so I
think whatever the topic, we'd have a good portion of the audience
that would be interested.

Regards,
Ed

We can definitely host here at Rice.

Great!  Hadley, who do we need to contact about reserving a room with a projector?  Is that something you could set up?  Also, what about getting guest access to the internet for the participants?

I was thinking Wednesday, October 27th might be a good time for the next meeting if that works for a good number of people.

One of the things that seems to be working for other user groups is to do a 10 minute presentation on either a user project with R or an industry specific application or library (ex: rmetrics for finance) and then a more generally applicable 20-30 minute presentation (ex: working with large data, graphing social networks with R and twitter, etc.).  I was thinking we could try that format for the first meeting.

I'll start another thread to request/signup for topics.

I can do that. Rice has free onsite wireless, so internet access
wouldn't be a problem.

Unfortunately I'm away that day, so we'd need to find an alternative
Rice sponsor. Maybe Kam would be interested?

Sounds great to me. We could also think about getting set up on
meetup.com, like the majority of the other useR groups.

Hello Everyone,

Sure, I can set up a room with a projector. Let me know the following: (1) Start time, (2) duration of the meeting, (3) number of people expected.

Thanks

Kam

October 27th was just a suggestion...we could definitely move the date if it would work better for people.  Hadley, do you have a date that would work for you?

I'm basically away Oct 24 - Nov 3, so it's probably just best to plan
around me. I will be giving a talk at HACASA (Houston Area Chapter of
the American Statistics Association) on Nov 9 on writing R packages,
so that might be another event people might find useful. I can send
more info closer to the time.

Hadley-

I think the November 9th presentation would be useful to a lot of
people in the group. I know I'd be interested in seeing it. Is that
something we could attend or would you be able to share your
presentation materials with the group list?

Kam-

October 27th, 6:30-8:30. Last time we had around 10 people. I would
expect 10-15.

Also, what are options for getting some food delivered near campus?
Since we're meeting around dinner time I think it would work best to
have something to eat and drink.

The November 9 meeting is open to anyone. The  Houston Area Chapter of the American Statistical Association (HACASA) usually meets the second Tuesday of each month. Check out the website for more info:
We will have a talk tonight as well (Tuesday night). Some beer, wine, and light snacks provided (donations accepted).

cheers,
Jose-Miguel
