Anybody used them before?
Claiming they have stock and price isn't too bad... http://www.pifactory.co.za/

They have some nice stuff. I'd be interested as well.

I have been looking at the Piface, this could be fun to play with and was thinking about buying through them - glad to hear he was happy with the product.

And there goes their stock ):   Mailing list killed communica's Arduino Mega stock the other day so better be quick before the H4H members steal all the Pi's too! lol

Bought some stuff from them today. They look like a security systems whole seller so pifactory seems to be a side business

Who knows, that might just be a strategic move from their side to cater for next year when they'll start integrating Pi's into their commercial security solutions ;)

This just made me realise again how small the Pi is as it would be able to even hide behind an alarm activation panel and still be a server ...

Pi can be used to do SMS and mail cheaper than Alarm box add-ons. Nice!!

That's debatable. Pi + GSM USB modem (one that works) is not that cheap - not so nice! Unless I have it all wrong as my Pi skills are not that great.

Alarm systems when bought commercially is not cheap. Full stop :) Pi solution might work out cheaper, who knows.

You do have the option of sending the sms thru an online provider like clickatell and then you wouldnt need a GSM modem. would obviously need a working internet connection

True, but if I was making a alarm module using the pi then I would probably not use a usb modem. Rather use a modem module with and connect it straight to ttl level uart. I'm pretty sure the raspberry pi gpio pins bring out atleast one uart? if not more?

Would be a fun little project...

I would use a 3G dongle, not for the Internet, but to send the sms. They're cheap as chips these days and most people actually have unused spares lying around.

Problem solved.

Have anyone been able to use a cheap 3G dongle with a Pi sending SMS's? If so I would like to find out how.
