Good morning everyone,
We are still urgently seeking rescue placement for our big chocolate Lab, Doc (A305046)!
Doc’s former owner continues to visit the shelter almost daily to check on him. Despite the circumstances that led to his surrender, it is clear he is still deeply loved by his family and struggling with the separation. This handsome boy deserves the chance to begin again in a more stable environment.
Any support you can provide in helping Doc find his second chance would mean the world to him and to those who care about his future. Thank you all for everything you do for animals like Doc!
If you can help, please reach out to us as soon as possible at res...@columbiasc.gov or (803) 376-3723

Hi joy
I don’t know if DOC the chocolate lab is saved.
Please contact shelter for follow up.
I am swamped
Its -35’ with windchill here and we’re having a big Adoption event today.
Pray that the cold doesn’t keep people away, they’re saying on the news that if you have five or 10 minutes of exposed skin you’ll have frostbite. This is not good . Hope & pray some of these dogs get adopted.
Please if you find out if doc the choc lab is safe then let me know, could use some good news!
Thank you

*Chocolate Lab 'Doc' Needs Rescue Support Today @ Columbia Animal Services (SC)*
Dear Rescue Partners,
We are seeking urgent rescue placement for Doc (A305046), a handsome, neutered male chocolate Labrador who recently completed a required bite quarantine and is now transfer-only. In the shelter environment, Doc has presented with good kennel-side manners and has shown no aggression toward staff, people, or other animals while being walked and photographed. He appears social, goofy, and affectionate once comfortable, and staff have found him easy to handle outside of high-stress situations. However, due to his observed temperament and management needs, Doc is at higher risk for euthanasia as space and capacity constraints intensify, making timely placement critical.
Doc’s challenges stem from long-standing food-related guarding behavior that reportedly began very early in puppyhood, likely due to early competition for resources before placement with his owner. His family pursued extensive interventions over the years, including professional training, neutering, and behavioral medication, but ultimately felt they could no longer safely manage him in a home setting. These incidents were formally reported, which required Doc to complete a mandatory bite quarantine. He has now been officially released by DPH and is medically cleared for transfer.
Doc will need a rescue partner experienced with behavior management and safe handling protocols, ideally with access to a structured foster or sanctuary-style placement where food routines and boundaries can be carefully managed. This is a dog who has clearly been loved, advocated for, and worked with, but whose needs exceeded what his family could safely provide. With the right environment and experienced support, Doc may still have a meaningful quality of life. If your organization has the ability to assist, please reach out as soon as possible. Full records are available, and we are happy to discuss placement considerations in detail.
If you can help, please reach out to us as soon as possible at res...@columbiasc.gov or (803) 376-3723
