Problems crawling and searching

Hey there, I'm just downloaded hounder (Sep 12).
1. Install ran fine.
2. Configured seed urls and hotspots.regex
3. Crawl runs fine initially, then stops without error. It crawls 550+
urls where there should be much more.
4. The hounder/crawler/logs files are all zero-bytes.
5. No logs appear in the admin interface.
6. For reasons I can't fathom, the searcher returns status as BAD, and
even the crawled urls are not searchable.
Any ideas?
