Ihave only tried this once and I had actually manually installed Active Directory roles by this point, so not sure if this is a pre-requisite, but (somewhat unbelievably!) it worked and the Wizard completed successfully.

To apply, I removed the role Windows Server Essentials Experience. I was asked to perform a clean up. I did it and then I removed the role. Rebbot. Reinstall the role. Started the wizard again and everything worked fine.Hope to have been useful.

This issue usually occurs when you probably installed windows 10 pc and added them on to your windows server 2012 R2 / essentials and when checked on your dashboard and the user added shows offline. You probably read somewhere that you need to install the connector software. You follow the instructions and install it. You then realise that the connector is not for the windows10 pc and you try to uninstall it. Whilst you are uninstalling the the connector from the Server you come across a message stating "Could not delete key \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Server. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel". Since this is not removed you are keep on getting the error message when you try to configure your windows Server essential experience.

The solution I have found is;Assuming that Certificate Authority is already stopped and that you have removed it from your servers roles and features before you are able to install the windows server essential experience.

1) Open your Server Manager > Manage > Remove Roles and Features and remove windows server essential experience. If the server requires a restart, do this first2) Run - Regedit to edit the registry of your server. and go to HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows Server and rename this folder to "Windows Server.old" then exit the registry3) Go back to Server Manager > Manage > Add Role and Features and Install windows server essential experience. Once it installs it will ask you to configure your experience. It should work just normal and configure the server without giving you the error message.

I had a similar issue, which was caused becasue the Server was built using Software RAID, i.e Windows Mirroring. As crazy as this sounds, apparently if you have drives configured this way Server Essentials will not complete, it is a known Microsoft issue. If this is the problem unfortunately you will need to re-install from scratch with either Hardware RAID or no RAID.

To move away from Essentials once your additional DC is in place, you would have to move all FSMO roles to the new domain controller. Look in Google for migrating from Small Business Server (SBS) and you will find article that can be applied to Essentials.

If the AD domain controller is the only role running on that Windows Server 2012 Essential server, a good option would be enabling the Hyper-V role and creating a virtual machine running the OS you want as a new domain controller -v.io/creating-domain-windows-server-2016-via-powershell/ . After you finish creating the virtual machine, promoting it to your new domain controller, and migrating all the essential roles, you can demote the Essentials server and nuke it entirely, replacing it with a free Hyper-V Server Hyper-V Server 2019 Microsoft Evaluation Center or any other Windows Server of your choice.

After the transition, the Windows Server Essentials features remain on the server and are supported for up to 75 users and 75 devices. If you exceed either of these limits, you should use the Windows Server native tools to manage user accounts and devices.

This process can take 20-30 minutes in my experience. I have also seen it hang once indefinitely and not work. Unfortunately we were not able to figure that one out. If you are still having trouble though, I would review the CBS and DISM logs from the time you tried the upgrade. These logs can be found in the C:\windows\logs folder.

To upgrade the edition from Essentials to Standard, you just run the dism set-edition command. Following the steps above is all you need to do to upgrade and remove the restrictions, but not the features, of Essentials.

Hi there. We have a customer who has a DC (host) with Server essentials 2016 and a VM with Server 2016 Standard. Their VM is showing as not activated and is using KMS. We are looking to activate the VM with a retail license key.

To answer the first question. No features will be lost by upgrading the host. Just keep in mind Essentials features are only designed for a max of 75 users.

Activating the VM should be fairly straightforward. Just run these two commands: slmgr /upk followed by slmgr /ipk

I must add there are a couple of problems that should be addressed with the environment. First, you should never run the ADDS and Hyper-V role on the same host OS install. Second, when running any roles or applications other than Hyper-V on the host, you only get one VM license. The reason for this is that the Standard license only permits running 2 instances of the OS for workloads, not 3. Lastly, if you upgrade Essentials edition to Standard, make sure and purchase some CALs as the included 25 CALs with Essentials do not upgrade to Standard CALs.

Now I want to remove the Essential Features but the TurnOffFeaturesWizard tool is missing both through the Dash Board and in Bin folder. Are you able to help with resolution of this? Any help will be appreciated.

I purchased a new license for 2019 Standard and receive the following error. Any tips?:

Error: 87

The specified product key could not be validated.

Check that the specified product key is valid and that it matches the target edition.

I have a server 2016 standard I just built (PDC). I would like to downgrade it to essentials (bought a license key) so I do not have to deal with CALS. I have only 23 pc in enterprise, 2 printers, only 3 users. I only use it as a file server to house files.

This week I had a Skype conversation with a fellow MVP and friend from Brazil, Daniel Santos. He reported an issue he was having installing the Essentials 2016 TP4 OS which was stalling at 17% during the Essentials configuration Wizard.

Daniel has since installed a 2012 R2 Hyper-V Server, and an Essentials 2016 Guest and confirms that has installed correctly. I have installed it on a Bare Metal HP Microserver N40L also without any issue.

Following on with our own research, Daniel and i reproduced the Installation Stall a few more times and Daniel found that starting the Windows Server Essentials Management Service was enough to kick-start the install, without resorting to editing the registry.

I can confirm this issue on a Windows 10 build 1511 x64 Hyper-V host. I manually started the Windows Server Essentials Management Service and it continued past 17% to 39% where it rebooted and I had to manually start it again. It seems it is not starting after each reboot. Thank you for finding this fix as it was what I needed to continue testing this release.

I just built a Essentials R2 DC and and Exchange Server 2016 on Windows Server 2012 R2 (on VMs of course) but the dashboard integration in Essentials cant see the Exchange 2016 Server. Not sure if Microsoft intended or is aware of it but it kind of kicks using Exchange 2016 in the butt for now for those joining to an Essentials Domain.

i have started the service as above and i also noticed that dns was set to 127.0.0.1 so i added google dns server 8.8.8.8 and rebooted the server and run essentials role again and it completed without any issues

Can not get pass 16%. Have tried the work around in regedit (that was already set to false). Then the one (Windows Server Essentials Management Service) it was already running. Set my dns to 8.8.8.8 and that did not work. Stuck, any thoughts?

Thanks for your post. I installed Windows Server Essentials on a Dell Optiplex 780 without any problems. I installed it as virtual machine (VirtualBox) on windows 7 host. and it got stuck at 17% and 39%. Starting the Windows Essential Management Service helped in both cases.

I'm new here, first post, my first experince with HP hardware, too. When researching availability of the replacement for Windows Server 2019 Essentials, there seemed to be indications that 2019 would be that last edition of Server Essentials. However, I discovered that Windows Server 2022 Essentials was available but only through OEM system builders. I found the software and license for sale on the CDW website, and purchased. it., The COA sticker came with a server installation DVD for HP Proliant Servers. So I bought a used Proliant server, a DL380 Gen9. Now, as I understand from Microsoft informaiton, there is not a separate iso for essentials, just install Standard and the activation key will make it the Essentials version,. Well, I installed, activated but the software version is Windows Server 2022 Standard, not Essentials. I'm concerned about this because the Essentials version has 25 user CALs baked in. So not only is the full version overkill for my needs, maybe I will need to purchase CALs as well. Anyone know the answer to this? Is there another step beyond activation needed to turn this install into Windows Server 2022 Essentials?
