and another thing...

FBX importing workflow

I have a bunch of curves made by someone else in another DCC (Softimage)  export these curves as FBX  to bring into H16

I then get a Subnetwork node > inside is a load of gubbins and a null hierarchy linked to seperate Geo nodes > each geo node contains a single file pointer to a section of the FBX file that contains each of the curves.

My Qestion or workflow issue:-  is there no way I can turn these procedurally either individually or all together into the default Houdini curve node?   as I want to use these as inputs into curve forces for flip sims etc and is easier to deal with as curve nodes rather all the extra 'stuff' that FBX brings in by default.  it seems really awkward at the moment to manually go in by hand to each of the individual file nodes so I can then copy them out to make a new super 'merged' curve geo node. is this just me being super new to houdini or...?

Hi Rob!
Welcome to the list :)

Probably the easiest thing is to use an Object Merge node with a wildcard expression, something like this:

But otherwise, no, there's no easy way to turn all those into a single Curve SOP node.

brilliant Andy, I asked this on Discord think procedural server and they said that FBX royally sucks and to go and ask you Lol!

using the wild card with the object merge node is definately a solution.. as long as all my curves are called curveXXXX  - which they are :)

thanks a lot!

That was me on Discord Rob (LateralPixels). ;)

Knew Andy would have an 'easier' answer. I'd still recommend you explore Alembic at some point. Houdini works so much better with Alembic than it does with FBX.

But Andy's wildcard solution is nice and simple.

Haha! A nice bit of cross-pollenisation going on, I like it! :)

I can see that this list might quickly have the potential to become the go-to resource for Softimage to Houdini transition questions which is great.
