Hello,
I am following up on this comment

because the 'rewrite stuff as Python builtins' approach strikes me as
problematic.
Maybe the 'exchange objects instead of text" conundrum could be
addressed using middleware such as ICE
<http://www.zeroc.com/>
as the ability to glue together wildly different components is what a
shell is for, there are plenty of languages for programming at various
levels already.
Coming to think of it, some Python stuff I happened to run into
recently has some attitude problems (mishandling environment
variables, does not read standard input, nonstandard command line
syntax) which I would hate to encounter in an otherwise interesting
tool such as HotWire.
