Papa Emeritus II is the first Papa to have a mask custom-made for him, a process that would be repeated for all future Papas. Like the Papa before him, his mask depicts a bald elderly man with skull paint, although this time around both mask and skull paint are more realistic. On-stage, he wears a dark chasuble with green lining, with an accompanying Mitre. Both the chasuble and mitre have the Grucifix symbol embroidered onto it. Papa II also has a crozier with the Grucifix symbol on top.

He is the first Papa to have more than one outfit, although this second outfit is never seen on-stage, and only in Papaganda, live sessions, and some photoshoots. In this second outfit, Papa II wears a suit-jacket on top of a vest, alongside sunglasses (most likely to hide the eye holes of the mask). He is also bare-faced and, contradictory to his on-stage appearance, has a mustache.

Papa II made his live debut on December 15, 2012 at a special show in the band's hometown of Linkping, Sweden.[1] After Papa I passed the mic down to him, Papa II debuted a new song with the band called Secular Haze.

Papa II is also the first papa to appear without facepaint. During the Year Zero video, the Papaganda videos, and the studio sessions at Music Feeds Studio he wore a version of the mask without facepaint. He wore sunglasses to hide the eye cuts.

Papa II has been described as "a miserable, wounded, and bitter old man".[2] Some ghouls described him in interviews as being a "narcissist" and an "asshole". He was fired from the clergy due to not performing his duties in overthrowing churches and governments. On June 3, 2015, at a special hometown show in Linkping, Sweden, he was replaced by his "younger brother of three months", Papa Emeritus III.

In March 2018, he along with his brothers Papa Emeritus I and Papa Emeritus III were killed by their father Papa Nihil, Sister Imperator, and the clergy. They were embalmed and put on display on the Prequelle tour cycle as part of the Veneration of Relics.

Andrew and Illicit Ghost performed a few of their new tracks: Good Morning, Mr. Butterfly, Monsters, Fishes, Worlds in my Head, and Someone WIll Be There. Those last two in particular are my favorites of the new lineup. The development of Worlds in my Head from its debut in New York City until now has been one of my favorite parts of the Edu live show journey, and I cannot wait to hear a finished studio version. I also must note that Someone Will Be There continues to be an emotionally moving piece, especially when performed live by Andrew and Illicit Ghost. Their chemistry together as performers as well as artists really brought out the emotion in the piece, and brought tears to my eyes.

Right before we all left, we reconvened with Andrew on the upper level, where a large group of us formed a line to have our chance to talk to Andrew. I must commend Andrew once again for really taking each fan into consideration, giving us each ample time to talk, ask our questions, and take our pictures. Eventually it was my turn to talk with Andrew, and he remembered me from last time. After exchanging a few words, Andrew noted that he had brought me something and went to retrieve it. After emerging from a back hallway with a manila envelope, he apologized to everyone else for not bringing enough, and while yes I was worried that the crowd would be upset, they were quite encouraging of the upcoming exchange. It was particularly nice to know that they felt I had earned whatever was about to enter my possession.

After a solid few moments of anticipation, Andrew pulled out 2 very special discs from the envelope. A copy of Party Boobytrap, as well as a Tally Hall Internet Show Sneak Preview DVD with the Natural Ketchup skit on it. Needless to say, I was floored. He had not only remembered that I asked about PBT in Chicago, but also that he fulfilled my request and brought it for me AND That he thought about me along the way. It was a truly touching gesture by him, and a moment I will never forget.
He signed my setlist and WTTH Photo, we got a picture, and I moved to the back of the line. The remainder of my time was spent engaging with other fans and generally having a good time.

After everyone had their turn and had left. I spoke to Andrew just one last time to get my Good Day single signed, and to give him the developed photo we took together in Chicago. I got to share a few words with him in an interaction that I also will never forget. I thanked him for everything that he had done that night, and for being so patient with and interacting with all the fans equally.
I shared my excitement for the finished version of Worlds in my Head, as well as some other positive words. It was at the end that I confided in him some words about Someone will be There. The week before the show was not an easy one for me, and the night before was exceptionally a bummer, so I shared with him that his song really touched me in a way I had not expected it to, being the light at the end of a strain of bad days. I told him that Tally Hall had always been there for me during my darkest moments, and I think that resonated with him. It was amazing to know that he shared the same sentiment, and that he was happy his work had struck such an accord with me. We hugged and I departed the venue, but not before double checking that Andrew was still keeping his big promise for Boston.

Their 2013 major label debut, Infestissumam, topped the Swedish charts and won a Grammis Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Album. Ghost's ascendancy in the rock world continued with their 2015 album Meliora, which reached number one in Sweden and number eight in the US. The album's lead single, "Cirice", earned them the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.

Renowned for their unique on-stage presence, Ghost's members, except for the lead vocalist, are known as "Nameless Ghouls"[4] and perform in matching, face-concealing costumes. Until a 2017 lawsuit filed by former members of Ghost, the band's frontman, Tobias Forge, performed incognito under the persona of "Papa Emeritus", a character known for its "demonic anti-pope"[4] imagery. This theatrical element has been a hallmark of Ghost, with Forge adopting various incarnations of Papa Emeritus and other characters, such as "Cardinal Copia" for the 2018 album Prequelle and its supporting tour, A Pale Tour Named Death. Each character, marked by a prosthetic mask with black eye makeup and multi-colored eyes, adds to the band's mystique. In 2020, during the final show of this tour, Forge's Cardinal Copia character was promoted and transformed into "Papa Emeritus IV",[5] a persona he continued with for the 2022 album Impera and the corresponding Imperatour.

Ghost was formed in 2006, when future band leader Tobias Forge wrote the song "Stand by Him".[6] He said, "I said that this is probably the most heavy metal riff that has ever existed ... When the chorus came to me, it haunted my dreams. Every time I picked up the guitar, I ended up playing that progression, and when I fit the words in, it seemed to cry out for a Satanically-oriented lyric."[7] Forge then contacted his former Repugnant bandmate Gustaf Lindstrm to record the song.[6]

In early 2008, the two entered the studio to record three songs: "Stand by Him", "Prime Mover" and "Death Knell".[6] Afterwards Forge remarked to Lindstrm: "This definitely does not sound like two dudes that look like you and I".[6] Thus Forge decided that they should be an anonymous "theater band", and use their love of horror films and "the traditions of Scandinavian metal" in the band's imagery.[6][7] While other members of the band would wear black hooded robes and be called "Nameless Ghouls", Forge would go by "Papa Emeritus", dressed in Papal regalia and his face painted to resemble a skull.[8] Forge then chose the name Ghost for the group.[6] Initially Forge had no aspirations on becoming the band's vocalist, instead wanting to play guitar.[6] He offered the position of lead vocalist to Messiah Marcolin, Mats Levn, Christer Gransson and JB Christoffersson, all of whom passed.[6] As a result, Forge became the band's lead singer by default.[6] On 12 March 2010, Forge posted the first three Ghost songs on MySpace and within two days was contacted by records labels and managers wanting to work with the group.[6]

Ghost spent a few weeks in a basement studio in the band's hometown of Linkping recording their debut album.[8] In June 2010, the band released their first single "Elizabeth".[8] Ghost released their first studio album, Opus Eponymous, on 18 October 2010, on the independent record label Rise Above Records. The album reached number 50 on the Sverigetopplistan and was well received by critics, being nominated for the 2011 Grammis Award for "Best Hard Rock" album.[9][10][11] Ghost played their first concert on 23 October 2010 at the Hammer of Doom festival in Wrzburg, Germany.[12]

Ghost supported gothic metal band Paradise Lost on their "Draconian Times MMXI" tour in April 2011.[13] On 29 May, Ghost made their United States debut at the Maryland Deathfest.[14] The band performed at Download Festival in Leicestershire, England on 11 June. Following their performance, Phil Anselmo, lead singer of the band Down, performed wearing a Ghost T-shirt and invited three members of the band to join him on the main stage, where they performed Down's "Bury Me In Smoke" together.[15] In December 2011, Ghost took part in the "Defenders of the Faith III" tour with Trivium, In Flames, Rise to Remain and Insense.[16] The band then embarked on their first US tour, "13 Dates of Doom", beginning in New York on 18 January 2012, and ending on 2 February in Los Angeles.[17] Afterwards Ghost joined Mastodon and Opeth as the opening act on the Heritage Hunter Tour throughout North America during April and May 2012.[18][19][20][21] In June, Ghost received the award for "Breakthrough Band" at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards.[22]
