Hello everyone,

I am experiencing an issue with SCORM packages created using Hot Potatoes 7 and uploaded to Moodle 4.1.4.

The SCORM activity launches correctly, and students can complete the exercises without any problems. However, Moodle does not record the student's grade in the Gradebook, and the activity is not marked as completed, even after the student finishes all questions.

What I have observed:

  • The SCORM package opens and runs normally.
  • Student attempts are recorded.
  • No grade is transferred to Moodle.
  • Activity completion is not triggered.
  • As a result, students do not receive completion credit for the activity.

I would like to know if anyone has encountered this issue when using Hot Potatoes 7-generated SCORM packages in Moodle 4.1.4. Is there a specific SCORM version, export setting, or Moodle configuration required to ensure that scores and completion status are properly reported?

Any suggestions, troubleshooting steps, or workarounds would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Andres,

Could you use the browser inspector and see if there are any JavaScript errors when the exercise is completed?

I did Google/AI this, since I don't really know much about Moodle, and got these suggestions:

A conventional SCORM package fails to report a score in Moodle 4.1.4 usually because the package does not populate the cmi.core.score.raw variable (or sends it too late), the Moodle grading method is set to "Learning Objects" instead of a score-based method, or the student triggered a premature completion/preview state. [1, 2, 3]
Content and Package Issues
  • Missing score.raw variable: The authoring tool (such as Articulate or Captivate) fails to map or transmit cmi.core.score.raw (SCORM 1.2) or cmi.score.raw (SCORM 2004) to the LMS. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  • Late score transmission: The exercise is programmed to dispatch the score only on the absolute final closing slide or exit trigger, and students close the browser tab prematurely. [1]
  • Incorrect tracking data: The package tracks slide/page views instead of a scored quiz evaluation, but Moodle expects a grade item. [1, 2, 3]
Moodle Activity Settings
  • Incorrect Grading Method: Moodle's activity setting for Grading method is configured to "Learning objects" rather than "Highest grade", "Average grade", or "Sum grade". The "Learning objects" setting only records a binary 1 or 0 based on completion, ignoring raw score data. [1]
  • Accidental Preview/Review Mode: The student session accidentally initializes in preview or review mode due to package design or conflicting attempt settings, which blocks active score recording. [1, 2]
Hope this helps,
Martin

Hi Martin

I really appreciate your guidance on this issue.

I have the SCORM files uploaded in Moodle, and I have noticed that the grades for these assignments are recorded correctly for some students. However, the grades for other students are not being recorded, even when they complete the assignment multiple times.

I have already changed the Moodle grading settings, but the issue persists. I am using HP7 with the SCORM 1.2 integration functions enabled. These are the only SCORM files that are experiencing this problem.

I am sharing both the HP7 file and the SCORM package for your review.

This looks like a bug. I'll try to figure it out if I have time. I have no way of testing SCORM stuff, though, unfortunately.

Cheers,
Martin
