The Respondus LockDown Browser is a locked browser for taking tests. It prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during a test. If a test requires that Respondus LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take the test with a standard web browser. LockDown Browser should only be used for taking Canvas tests. It should not be used in other areas of Canvas. Watch a 2-minute video explaining Respondus LockDown Browser.
(Skip this step if you borrowed an NWTC laptop or if LockDown Browser has already been installed. Look for the Respondus desktop icon or search for Respondus in the Windows menu.)
*Note: If your instructor uses "New Quizzes" within Canvas, you must enter Canvas in a regular web browser first, then access the quiz from the regular web browser. Respondus LockDown Browser will automatically launch and open then.
we have been using for a while coderunner for the labs of our Python programming courses, and everything was working fine, and with great feedback from our students. However, since the exam session is approaching we started testing the integration with respondus and lockdown browser (that we use as proctoring system). As a result, we experienced several issues with the editor, which is behaving in a strange way (randomly, the editor get stuck, highlighting lines of codes and cancelling them, or selecting words automatically, and requiring students to move the cursor everywhere around to be able toi write again). I post a link to a video that describes some the issues students faced:
This is a severe issues, which prevents students from using coderunner with the lockdown browser. We have no idea how to fix the problem (which is probably due to some of the restrictions imposed by the LB). Thus, I ask the forum if any of you ever experienced the same problems and can provide suggestions to fix them.
As an emergency solution, we were planning to replace the ace editor with a standard textbox (this is again a bad solution, since we'll loose all eadvance editing features and syntax highlighting), but at least students could write the program in a decent way. However, I have no idea how to do that and, again, any pointer/suggestion how to do it would be highly appreciated
The two ways aren't exactly the same though. With (1) there's still a bit of JavaScript code managing the text area; it just autoindents each new line to align with the previous line and replaces with exactly 4 spaces (regardless of current indentation). (2) on the other hand gives you a pure browser text area with no JavaScript at all. I haven't used (1) for any serious editing for years, so you would need to check that option in your lockdown browser before the exam, too.
(2) could be a good choice if the problems are relatively intermittent; typing Ctrl-Alt-M twice will essentially reset the Ace editor state without damaging the existing text. However, it's possible that the lockdown editor locks out that particular key combination altogether.
It would be good to know what's going wrong, though. The Ace editor is very stable and used in lots of sites, so it's somewhat alarming to hear it doesn't work with the Respondus Lockdown browser. Is it possible to use an alternative secured browser with respondus, e.g. Safe Exam Browser? It's widely used with Moodle.
I think we can consider the problem closed, since we did not solve it but at least we understood where the issue is. Moodle is managed by our IT department, which installed coderunner upon request (we are just managing the jobe server). After a long investigation (and some supects from our side) it turned out that our moodle version is not updated, since it is a custom installation...
So, there are no bugs/issues in the current coderunner version (and apologies for raising a false problem). Thank you again for the tips, which allows us at least to use coderunner (in its text-basic version) for our exams
Thanks for reporting back, Andrea. It's good to know that the current version of CodeRunner doesn't seem to have the same problem. I do intermittently upgrade CodeRunner to the latest version of Ace, so presumably the problem was some weird incompatibility between the Respondus lockdown browser and an older version of Ace. Thanks for reporting the problem - others may hit it, too. I'm sure you're not the only site with an older version of CodeRunner!
Respondus traps every key press and disallows some. It may also be trapping and disallowing some output to the screen that is used by the Ace editor. If so, there is unlikely to be a solution: you might have to turn off the Ace editor during exams as discussed earlier in this thread.
This seems to indicate that this should not allow for a file upload submission, as that is already a different option. When I select to allow "Media Recordings" it presents the student with these options:
Because this is all one submission type, if I want to force the student to record video or audio directly into Canvas, I can not. If I want to force them to record a video or audio component, I can already do so by selecting "File Uploads" in the first screenshot and then restricting file types to the video/audio files I would like to accept. It seems strange that there is not a way to do the opposite - to only allow students to record into Canvas, especially because that seems to be what the selection in the assignment settings is designed for.
This is difficult, because with most students using HD quality cameras on their phones or HD video/audio recordings, these files are often significantly too large for their internet to handle uploading. At least a few times a week we have a student call in complaining that a submission is not going through, and we realize that they're trying to upload a 3.5 GB 6 minute HD video, and unless they're working on their school work from the NASA headquarters, it's probably not going to happen. In most situations, when we require video submissions, we want the student to have to record it into Canvas so we are not responsible for walking them through compressing any number of video files that they might not have the software to compress. We ask students to use the media recording into Canvas, but without the ability to require that as a submission type, we're at the students' mercy of listening and remembering. We would love to be able to control the submission type as the indicator ("media recordings") seems to imply.
We know we can cover up one of these tabs with CSS/JS, but we don't want to do that because it doesn't cover all browsers, it doesn't get factored into Canvas updates, and in certain assignments we do want them to be able to upload media files. We would much prefer that either the default behavior be changed for "media recordings", or there be a sub-selection under "media recordings" that indicates "only allow Canvas recordings" or something like that.
There are two related feature requests you may also want to consider - one is to change the icon after the fact to make it easier for teachers to grade (which would still be important if we get this request, because you can still both record and upload from the RTE in essay responses in assignments and quizzes as well) - Change the video icon to differentiate Canvas recorded video from uploaded video and the other is to change the video icon when only audio is present Unfortunate Audio Icon Needs Replacing .
I agree that this feature can prove challenging. I use this type of submission for pronunciation assignments, and experience too many students uploading recordings made on their cell phones, which I am then unable to access.
We appreciate you, and the submission of your idea. Your dialogue helps our product teams prioritize feature development. This idea is one of the lucky ones that was selected to get a little more time for voting as part of our evolution of the feature idea process. It was selected because of it's vote count and/or comment thread.
I have tried the new Quizzes.Next and there there is the option of using "Rich Text Editor" in "question type: Essay". It does currently not support the Canvas recording tool but perhaps in the future since the old engine do.
But with the suggestion above it could actually be interesting to have a new "question type: Media recording" and hence making also quizzes take full advantage of video/audio content submission as well, but it would really work best if it was possible to limit the submissions to stuff that is done in Canvas and not upload any media unless the teacher wants to allow it.
We use Respondus Lockdown Broswer and some of our language instructors would like students to be able to record media as a verbal part of their quiz within the Lockdown environment. I received word from Respondus Lockdown Browser support that if the Upload Media and the Record Media were separated then they could allow the Record Media to function in the Lockdown Browser environment. Currently the media button is removed from the rich text editor in the environment. It would be really great if instructors could allow this for students in Lockdown Browser. Currently they have to separate those questions from the main part of the quiz for it to operate.
For new, registered students, Canvas accounts are created about 2 weeks before the term begins. If a student registers after that time, it can take up to 24 hours after the time of registration for the Canvas account to be created.
If the course does not appear on your Dashboard, click the "Courses" icon on the left toolbar, then click the "All Courses" link at the bottom of the list, then navigate to the course. If you still do not see it, submit a Canvas Help ticket by clicking the "Help" icon and selecting the "Report a Problem or Ask a Question" option. In the description field, be sure to include your name and MC student ID and we will add you to the course.
