Parents need to know that Kong: Skull Island is a very violent, action-packed reboot of the King Kong story. Set in the 1970s, the movie follows a group of scientists on a mission to survey a mysterious island in Southeast Asia. That's where they encounter several dangerous giant creatures, including an ape trying to protect his habitat (there are also giant birds, a spider, an octopus, and reptilian creatures). Things get pretty brutal, with victims being dismembered, stomped on, eaten, and tossed around; helicopters also crash and are ripped apart. So you can expect a high body count, with scene after scene of jump-worthy action, death, and gore. The language can also be strong, with one use of "f--k," plus several uses of "s--t," "ass," "bitch," etc. There's also some social drinking, but sex is limited to embraces and very brief implied prostitution in a couple of scenes set in Vietnam and Thailand. Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, and Oscar winner Brie Larson co-star, accompanied by a diverse supporting cast; themes include teamwork and courage. Before the marketing began to roll out, audiences expected Kong: Skull Island to follow a similar tone and style as previous King Kong movies... until actor John C. Reilly appeared, and threw expectations out the window. The reveal of his character, Hank Marlow (an American pilot who crash landed on the island in World War II) began with his one-of-a-kind leather jacket, emblazoned with the phrase "good for your health." Fans of Reilly's 'Dr. Steve Brule' character born from Tim & Eric had their minds blown, seeing his catchphrase ("For your health!") adapted into such a blatant easter egg.
While monster movies can sometimes falter in its own magnitude, often times finding itself to be a bit too ridiculous, this film flourishes with great acting and an understanding of what it is. Something unexpected was how funny the movie was, but without overdoing it. The comedy that is sprinkled throughout this action-packed film is mainly delivered by John C. Reilly who portrays Hank Marlow, a World War II Lieutenant stranded on the island for nearly 30 years.
Choi had fought in countless movies, but he had never seen this kind of violence before. Choreographed Hollywood fights are tidy and uncluttered; filmmakers want viewers to see what's going on. This violence was hard to follow and hard to watch. At one point, a scrawny blond expat got knocked over and knocked out. The biggest gangster walked over and stomped repeatedly on his skull.
