For a typical host system, we recommend that you have a 1 GHz or faster 64-bit processor (2GHz recommended) and 2GB RAM minimum (4GB RAM recommended). You must have enough memory to run the 64-bit host operating system, plus the memory required for each guest operating system and for applications on the host and guest. See your guest operating system and application documentation for their memory requirements. VMware Player requires approximately 150MB of disk space to install the application. I wish to install VMware Player on a PC currently set up as dual-boot with both Windows XP SP3 32-bit and Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. The basic PC is based on an AMD Athlon 3800+ processor (about 5 years old) so no multi-core capabilities. There are two monitors and there is plenty of HDD space available on 2 drives. I'd like to set up VMware in one of the machines and migrate the other one to run as a virtual machine.

A quick update on this interesting challenge. I have solved the "disappearing XP install" challenge and have successfully installed VMware Player on my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit system. I am presently in the process of backing up the Windows XP machine so I can use VMware Converter to transfer it to run under VMware Player on the 64-bit side.

It's not done yet, but I think stabilizing the Windows 7 64-bit installation and using VMware Player in that environment to run the necessary XP environment I need for some specialized apps is a good way to go. Later, I'll try testing a VMware Player install on the XP machine and running the Windows 7 64-bit in that to see if the XP drivers are more stable for the hardware I have.

I recently downloaded the Standard version of the K-Lite Codec Pack. Selecting the Advanced installation process gave me the option of configuring and automatically using the 64-bit version of Windows Media Player instead of the standard 32-bit.

In terms of security, 64-bit media player with 64-bit codecs may benefit more from ASLR with their larger possible memory address (4096 times more, which could be the different between practical and theoretical attack). Such overflow attack was the key behind Stagefright in Android, and there was multitudes of vulnerabilities on WMP relying on buffer overlow.
