http://www.couchsurfing.com/group_read.html?gid=808&post=1312664Dear fellow HC/CS Moscow members & guests,
After last week's well attended gathering, we're heading to wide open
spaces again next week! And just so that it's announced well in
advance, I'm actually putting out the notice five days in advance.
Instead of going to a real park, we'll be having the meeting at the
gorgeous
pond at back of the Novodevichy Convent.
As usual, we'll provide options just in case it rains. But I'll have to
state here that the options are only for informative purposes so that
you're aware of the roofed places in the neighborhood.
The organizer will be
Luba Taran, who will also be anchoring the
World Cinema Club
on Sat, 2 Aug 2008. Having learned past lessons, we'll try to catch as
many of you as possible even without having to call cellphones. It just
requires a bit more leg work from all of you:
1 You can go to the 7:30pm meeting at the turnstiles of the exit closest to Novodevichy Convent;
2 If you're late, then go directly to the pond itself using the map
provided and then walk to the Novodevichy Square where McCloskey's Mama
Duck and eight ducklings are. There are benches in that area. Our
intrepid and punctual park people should be there waiting;
3 If it rains really hard, then you can try one of the suggested alternative pubs

Novodevichy Convent (Russian: Новоде́вичий монасты́рь,
Богоро́дице-Смоле́нский монасты́рь), sometimes translated as the New
Maidens' Monastery, is probably the best-known cloister of Moscow.
Unlike other Moscow cloisters, it has remained virtually intact since
the 17th century. In 2004, it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage
Site.
If it's your first time there, then it would be good for you to come
earlier and visit the convent itself. There's also a lovely necropolis/
cemetery at the back, which can more than hold up against the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris in its elaborateness. The cemetery holds the
tombs of 27,000, including Russian authors (
Nikolai Gogol, Mikhail Bulgakov), musicians (
Nikolai Rubinstein, David Oistrakh, Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich), playwrights (
Anton Chekhov, Ilya Ilf, Konstantin Stanislavsky), poets (
Vladimir Mayakovsky, Nazim Hikmet) and directors (
Sergei Gerasimov, Sergei Eisenstein), as well as famous actors (
Olga Knipper), dancers (
Anna Pavlova), political leaders (
Nikita Khrushchev, Raisa Gorbachev, Maxim Litvinov), and scientists (
Pavel Cherenkov). The latest noteworthy additions were
Boris Yeltsin and world renowned cellist
Mstislav Rostropovich last year.

Since I won't be there during the meeting, we'll see each other on 05
Aug 2008. I am sure the park meeting will be a success - we'll make
them famous and irresistible! (Burak, go for Nazim Hikmet at least!);)
Best,
