FORMER GHOSTS
+++++++++++++
Former Ghosts is the synthpop inspired project led by Freddy Ruppert
(of This song is a mess but so am I) and consisting of Jamie Stewart
(of Xiu Xiu), and Nika Roza (of Zola Jesus).
Jamie's (Xiu Xiu, etc) influence on the album enters obliquely,
buttering some of the albums harder edges, organizing the sometimes
disoriented moments of glitch and electro-mania. He plays an
unfamiliar role -- softer, more understated (in his particular
context) -- but in his familiar style. Starring solo on "I Wave,"
you're drawn into the springy synths, cushioned by his smooth voice--
the track is almost a reprieve from heavier textures found elsewhere
in the album.

LAUGHING MAN
+++++++++++++
"Their sparse, bluesy, indie sound offers up something that stands
apart from other acts in these parts. With a sound that at times
recalls the bedroom soul of Cody Chestnutt (minus the shitty lyrics,
of course) and Devendra Banhart’s Tyrannosaurus Rex blues-folk"
-All Our Noise
"DC’s Laughing Man is best described as an electroclash Isley
Brothers. Their live act is utterly charming. Lead singer Brandon
Moses is like a combination between Andre 3000- Sammy Davis Junior-
Unstable Fiona Apple- crooning, dancing, and emoting while pushing out
doo wop, blues, and noise rock. With bassist Luke Stewart’s effortless
cool and impromptu verses from drummer Michel Harris, Laughing Man is
sure to make you hit yourself over the head and ask: why can’t I be
this cool?"
-Brightest Young Things
"After the band's set, David asked someone "in the know" who they were
and was told: the Laughing Man. And maybe it was all the vodka talking
(er, slurring) but he was all, "Man, they were really, really good!"- -
