I am using Horos v 3.3.6 on MacBook pro High Sierra 10.13.6. I have not been able to update Horos for a long time now, because every time I press "check for any updates", it gives me a message "you do not have an active internet connection". How can I fix this?

Hi,

This is most likely happening because there seems to be an issue with the certificate for the site the code is attempting to check:

In newer versions of macOS this URL probably gets switched to https:

When I use Safari on macOS 11.6.1 (Big Sur) to hit that URL it gets a certificate warning/error (Chrome does not). This is probably why the update check fails and the plugin manager cannot get a list of plugins.

As a workaround, you can visit the above URL using Safari and click on the Visit this Website at the security warning and then enter your login password at the prompt. Then Horos will be able to connect to the horosproject.org/horos-content site again.

To follow up, there is a Horos 4.0.0RC5 but you need to download it from the horosproject site as 3.3.6 is the last official update. I recommend having both (you can rename your current /Applications/Horos.app to /Applications/Horos_3.3.6.app or something else before installing Horos 4.0 if you want to install both).

This workaround doesn't work for me on any MacOS Catalina computers. It's nothing but an xml text containing the folllowing:
This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>Horos</key>
<string>20191217</string>
</dict>
</plist>

So what are we supposed to do with this?

While I'm at it, I observe that Horos has not been updated since 12.20.2020. What's up with that?

The workaround okays the certificate on your system. Did you relaunch Horos and try re-opening the plugins manager or check for update functions?

As for Horos not being updated for a while...I was one of the last developers who made changes, but am now too busy with many other projects. I don't think many, if any, other developers are making changes to the main project. As it is an open source project, you can visit the Horos GitHub project and provide fixes/updates (https://github.com/horosproject/horos). Purview is leading the project and may be able to offer a better answer for a roadmap and project plan.

I would be willing to make more effort to bring Horos up to date, but I have very little volunteer time to devote to Horos other than offering some support here. And there are plenty of capable replacements available (OsiriX MD, aycan workstation), that while require payment also have the paid staff to keep the applications up to date with major changes to macOS and it's supported hardware.

Dr. Jensen, thank you very much for your detailed reply. Yes, I quit and relaunched Horos several times and it still says it can't connect to the Internet. It's a minor annoyance.

Last time I checked, OsiriX MD went for over $600 a year. I'm in solo private practice and switched to Horos specifically for that reason. Plus they have a very annoying disclaimer on every image. I am not a radiologist, rather a surgeon, and I use Horos only to display advanced diagnostic imaging studies such as MRIs and CTs to my patients and their families.

I'm very sorry to hear that Horos is not being maintained. Thanks very much for the update.

Another OsiriX-based alternative that is free is Miele-LXIV available on the Mac App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/miele-lxiv/id988332475

According to the author's website there is a Windows and Linux versions in the works: https://dicom.3utilities.com/viewer.php

Yes, OsiriX is expensive. But developing a niche product WITH regulatory clearance from the FDA and other agencies is expensive and time-consuming.
