Eftichia Papagianopoulou (1893-1972) was a Greek lyricist, born in Aidini near Smyrna (now Izmir) in Asia Minor in 1893. She left Smyrna in 1919 because of the Greek-Turkish war just three years before Smyrna's disaster in 1922 by the Turks. She came in Greece & settled permanently in Athens. She is the lyrics writer of many and very popular Greek songs. She co-operated with many composers like Vassilis Tsitsanis, Apostolos Kaldaras and Manos Hadzidakis. However she never became very famous in the greater public until her death in 7 January 1972. Her great offer to the Greek music through her exceptional ability in writing lyrics wasn't broadly known and recognised, however more and more people start learning that many of the successful songs of 1950s and 1960s belong to her. A book written in 2002 by the lyricist and journalist Lefteris Papadopoulos, who was a personal friend of her during the last years of her life helped a lot for her work's recognition.
Vamvakaris was born on May 10, 1905 in Ano Chora, Syros Greece and died on 8 February 1972 at the age of 66. His family belonged to the sizeable Roman Catholic community of the island, the "Francosyrans", a name deriving from the colloquial Greek reference to West Europeans collectively as "the Franks". At the age of 12 he went to the port of Piraeus and worked as a stevedore, a pit-coal miner, a shoe-polisher, a paperboy, a butcher and other odd jobs. One day he heard a bouzouki player playing, and vowed that if he did not learn to play the instrument in six months he would chop off his own hand with a cleaver (he was working in the public abattoirs at the time). He learned bouzouki, becoming an innovative virtuoso player and began to write songs of his own. At first he often played in clandestine hashish-smoking establishments known as tekes. Later he and his band, Giorgos Batis, Anestis Delias and Stratos Pagioumtzis played in more legitimate clubs and taverns. They were extremely popular and Markos made many recordings. Vamvakaris recorded his first rebetiko disc, "Narchosouna re magka mou" (Να 'ρχόσουνα ρε μάγκα μου) in 1932. Among other songs in that period, he wrote the classic love song "Frankosyriani" (Φραγκοσυριανή). After the liberation of Greece from the occupation of Nazi, his music was no longer fashionable. He also suffered badly with arthritis in his hands which crippled his bouzouki playing and from asthma that hampered his singing. The slump in his fortunes lasted until the early 1960s when Vassilis Tsitsanis initiatives many of his old songs and were revived & sung by singers including Grigoris Bithikotsis & Stratos Dionysiou. His composing style was very simple: minimal orchestration, melodic lines and lyrics as devoid of ornamentation as possible. His strophic masterpiece "Your eyelashes shine" is a typical example of his art. It consists of just three short couplets, each sung twice to the same melodic phrase, with clauses reversed for the second time and with a single instrumental phrase interspersed between them. As the years pass, his towering contribution to Greek music emerges. All other Greek composers, of his time and afterwards, revere him as their master teacher and Mikis Theodorakis remarked: "We all, are branches of a tree. Markos is that tree".
Giannis Papioannou, (January 18, 1913 - August 3, 1972), was a famous Greek musician and composer, born in Kios (now Gemlik, Turkey). At the age of 2 lost his father and 7 years later he lived the Asia Minor Catastrophe. Later moved with his mother and grandmother in Samothrace and finally moved to Piraeus. First appeared professionally alongside with Marco Vamvakari and Stelios Keromyti. Generally his songs characterised by a mixture of "kantada", "mpallo" and from "Mikra-Asia sounds". He is considered as the first in the popular "rebetiko" song who used in the recordings of the so-called "Primo Secondo" (Difonia). He died on August 3, 1972 at the age of 58 in a road accident in Athens and was buried in the cemetery in Kallithea.
Vassilis Tsitsanis was a Greek songwriter and bouzouki player. He became one of the leading Greek composers of his time and is widely regarded as one of the founders of modern Rebetika. Tsitsanis wrote more than 500 songs and is still remembered as an extraordinary bouzouki player. He was born in Trikala on January 18, 1915. From a young age, Tsitsanis was interested in music and learnt to play the mandolin, violin and the bouzouki which were the mainstay of so many of his songs. In 1936 he left for Athens to study Law, and by 1937, had made his first musical recording. In 1937 he moved to Thessaloniki, where he served his military service and stayed there for about 10 years, during the German occupation of Greece. There he became famous and wrote many of his best songs that were later recorded after the end of the War. By the shut-down of the Record Companies from the German occupation Forces in 1941, he had already recorded about 100 of his own songs and played on many recordings of other composers. In 1946, Tsitsanis returned to Athens and began recording many of his own compositions that made famous many of the singers that worked with him, such as Sotiria Bellou, Marika Ninou and Prodromos Tsaousakis.

From the period 1950-1956 was a conductor. He wrote many songs, rebetika, folk, which became big hits. For a long time he worked with the Salonikios, who was one of the greatest musicians of that time period. He died in 1970 at the age of 54 years. For decades in the market was not a disc with his songs. Although he left a considerable number of songs, there are few who know him or who (want) to be remembered. Fortunately, solutions gave the Greek Recording Archive, where Panagiotis Kounadis published 3 collections with 46 compositions and also biographical details.
