My favorite book is Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals by Kristen Leigh Bell. Bell is a certified aromatherapist who has specialized in the use of aromatherapy for animals for almost 30 years. Bell cautions to "always D-I-L-U-T-E essential oils with dogs!" She suggests starting with a dilution suitable for a human toddler, which translates into 10 drops of essential oil in 1/2 oz (15mL) carrier oil (1-2%).
Bell's Motion Sickness blend (page 159)
1/2 oz (15 mL) carrier oil (Bell prefers Hazelnut or Sweet Almond)
8 drops Peppermint
7 drops Ginger
Candice wrote: I wanted to share how we have used essential oils on our Yorkie, Cocoa. She has always had difficulty riding in the car and would typically throw up. I tried rubbing some Peaceful on her belly before a car ride, and you can visibly see it's effect on her. She is no longer restless and anxious but will lie down on my lap and be very calm.
Last week she seemed lethargic, didn't want to eat and had a little diarrhea, so I thought that perhaps something had upset her tummy. I rubbed some Digestion Support on her belly. Again, I could see a visible shift only a short while after applying the oil, and after a second application a few hours later she was almost back to her usual perky self. I think with animals - especially small ones like Cocoa - the oils work more quickly and the effects are really visible.
