When dosing probiotics, start with a low dose and slowly increase - probiotic use may cause powerful reactions. We have a tendency to ramp up doses too fast and get negative reactions. The following was written by Baden who is the author of one of the GAPS books.
Prescript-Assist is a clinically proven probiotic that contains soil organisms. We are very pleased with this product.
Dear folks,
This is being sent out as a 'preventative reminder'. Please take a moment to read it.
Probiotics are very, very powerful. A small amount can cause tremendous die-off.
For most adults, a good starting dose of Bio-Kult is 1/4 capsule.
For most kids, a good starting dose of BK is 1/10th capsule.
The dose should only be started or increased after
(a) at least 4-7 days have passed, *and*
(b) die-off has eased up
The first few increases, at least, should be by only 1/4 cap or 1/10th cap respectively. You may be able to increase a bit faster as time goes on, but not at first.
It may well take *several months* to reach a therapeutic dose.
If you have started at a higher dose than this, or have increased faster than this, *and are experiencing problems* (too intense die-off symptoms), cut back to this beginning dose and start again.
If you are using a different probiotic, you will need to compare the live cell counts of that one with those of BK to determine comparable starting amounts.
Fermented foods should be treated likewise, ie. Wait for the diet's initial die-off to ease, then start with just one tsp of sauerkraut juice, working up from there.
Please note: These are not official BK or GAPS words. These are my own ideas, based on watching very specific patterns on this list. For more tips for an easier GAPS and/or for a complete guide to probiotics, please see GAPS Guide: Simple Steps to Heal Bowels, Body and Brain Chapter 7 (www.gapsguide.com/book). Bio-Kult is available in the US at www.GAPSdiet.com.
Sincerely,
Baden
