Hello- I just joined this group, and already somewhat familiar with EO's, but Heritage is something I will be switching to.  : )

Can anyone give advice on any oil(s) that will help a German Shorthair with her severe anxiety? She is or daughter and son-in-laws dog. She is terrified of thunder, lightning, rain...anything that even suggests a storm coming. The wind and leaves blowing. Very sad. She has chewed through crates- so they now have a true indestructible one (looks like a jail cell crate- made of steel). Poor dog has bitten the bars and broken teeth. They have been to a behaviorist,  she is on meds, but nothing is working. She has chewed up every dog bed inside her crate.

Thank you in advance for help.

Karen

Hi Karen,

You'll find some general information about using the oils with dogs by typing "dogs" into the search field on the Forum. Author of Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals by Kristen Leigh Bell cautions to "always D-L-U-T-E essential oils with dogs!" She suggests starting with a dilution suitable for a human toddler, which translates into 10 drops of essential oil in 1/2 oz (15mL) carrier oil (1-2%).

I found a testimony where someone used Peaceful to calm their dog for "fear of thunder." This is the testimony:

40. I've used both Lavender and Peaceful (on separate occasions) on my schnauzer for fear of thunder, and both have worked quite well. I try to apply it to our dog well before the storm hits because even the change in barometric pressure sends her into a tizzy. - Nikki

I'm hoping you'll get more input from others. Please let us know if you find something that helps :)

Blessings, Linda

Good Morning, Linda,

Thank you for your info. about these particular oils. I will suggest them today and possibly they will want to give them a try. I will also check the search field as you suggested. Someone else responded about Thundershirts but unfortunately, they have one and it does not help the poor frightened dog.

Blessings back!
Karen

This isn't an EO but could certainly be used along with EOs.  There are comfort restraints called Thundershirts too.  We have English Shepherds, 2 of which are afraid of any loud noise like guns, thunder, balloons popping etc.  I've not used the Thundershirts personally but I've heard good testimony from others with dogs that are afraid of these noises and situations.  The shirt is tight fitting and gives a sense of comfort to them.

Blessings,
Laralee
