Susan asked: Has anyone successfully used essential oils as a blood thinner? My husband was recently put on a prescription blood thinner in an attempt to avoid blood clots after a medical procedure. I understand the need to avoid clotting in his case, but we seek to avoid prescriptions meds as much as possible and also the medication he is currently taking is causing a lot of side effects! Thank you so much for any input anyone can share!
Linda answered: I imagine we all recognize that this is a difficult topic to comment on - no one wants to share something that will lead you in the wrong direction. A personal testimony would be helpful, but ultimately, each of us must connect with the will of our Lord for our personal situations.
I found a few articles that support the use of plants - not necessarily essential oils:
Article: Extracts of Nutmeg
Article: Components of Clove have been shown to have antithrombotic (anti-blood clot) activity
Eugenol [the active component of Clove essential oil] is an inhibitor of platelet activity (Janssens et al 1990) and it may be assumed that the oil inhibits blood clotting (Tisserand & Balacs 1995b p. 121); caution is recommended for anyone taking anticoagulants. (Reference: Price, Shirley and Leon in Aromatherapy for Health Professionals p. 453)
Helichrysum has been shown to have potent protective qualities against the oxidation of lipids (cholesterol) which is important in minimizing chances for blood clots.
Testimony found online:
“The son of a friend had a blood clot that extended down the side of his leg from hip to knee. The affected leg was double the size of his other. He was seeing a doctor and had been given increasing doses of cumadin up to a current dose of 20 mgs. This had been going on for nine months with no improvement and his mother was concerned about internal bleeding from that much cumadin. Her son began putting Helichrysum on his leg and covering the clot with a warm cloth to work the oil further into the area. Within a week, the clot was three quarters smaller and the swelling in the leg had gone down considerably. He and his mother are thrilled, and he continues to use the oil.”
Consider:
- Omega 3 essential fatty acids (some feel Krill oil is a good choice)
- B Vitamins support the heart
- Cayenne Pepper
- Ginger
- Essential oils: Clove, Helichrysum (Blend), Cypress, Geranium: Apply to veins on the sides of the neck
- Blood Clot Aid blend is a possibility
