HiHas anyone managed to get Thunderbird to work with a Gmail "App Password"? I've just enabled 2-step verification, generated an App Password for Thunderbird to use, and simply can't get it to work. I've gone into the password manager (Options / Security / Saved Passwords) and edited the password for both inbound and outbound. The Google App Password is a 16 character string displayed in groups of four, I've tried with or without the space between the groups.

Gmail will then add a token into Thunderbird, stored in same place as saved passwords. From then onwards gmail will use that token instead of the normal password. You will not need to enter passwords.

I am assuming that the "open a web page with Google login" is an oauth login process, once completed a token is created that Thunderbird and Google use for a very long time. around six months I understand.

Thanks. I need to look into oAth. To put this in context my missus has continual problems with her Gmail account being blocked as suspected unauthorised access. You maybe know what I mean, "Sign-in attempt was blocked. Someone just used your password to try to sign in to your account from a non-Google app.".

Thanks a million. I think it's starting to work now. I just fired up Thunderbird from cold and looked at the account properties, Authentication Method has changed to OAuth2 both under Server Settings and Outgoing SMTP.

BTW you might want to look at your anti virus product. Some offer a VPN service that they will tell you makes everything so much more secure. but VPN's have a habit of masking your location. Very popular with some folks that like to watch US TV shows when they are not in the US etc. Services like google that are looking for weird changes in location end up blocking their users, because they are logging in from all over the world. Australia one minute, the US a minute later etc.

Sorry I maybe wasn't clear. When I checked I found it was already set to OAuth2, I didn't need to make the change. Now I think about it maybe that's Thunderbird's default now for Gmail, because when I setup the account on that installation I selected Gmail specifically.

The only further think to add is that I'm not sure about the suggestion to remove the 2-step verification. The whole point here is to make sure that nobody can access the account simply by knowing the password.

If you are using 'Authentication Method: OAuth2', then you would not need the app specific password as gmail would use a token it applies and it uses token (a load of numbers and letters like a complicated password) instead of normal password. In this case you need to stop the two step verification.

If using 'Authentication Method: Normal Password' and you have set up to use two step verification, then you would use the app specific password instead of Normal Password. In this case you would need to keep the two step verification.

Sorry to harp on but I still don't see why two step should be disabled when using OAuth2. I can see why from one point of view it's not needed, but if the original point is to prevent access to the account solely by password, then surely it's needed for that reason even if Oauth2 doesn't require it.

After completing the 2-Step Verification enrollment process, you'll be prompted to enter your password AND a verification code (i.e., the "second step") anytime you sign-in to Gmail from a computer/browser that you are using for the first time. After the initial sign-in, the computer will be "trusted" and will no longer prompt for approval the next time you sign-in to Gmail. I can't get Mail to accept my password ever since setting up 2 step verification on Google. I asks repeatedly for my password which doesn't work. I deleted and set up my gmail again, and the problem persists. Oddly, I can send an email to other accounts with my gmail account but can't recieve any in the account. I went to Google settings and made sure all the right check boxes were clicked. Ideas?

I was having the same issue and I found that the problem was my password for logging in to gmail to receive mail and the password for sending mail were out of sync, and this was causing me to have to revoke and re-issue passwords for the application. Everytime I would check or send email after a reset the behavior would repeat itself. I reset the pasword, chnaged the passwords to match in 'Keychain Access' and I have not experienced a problem with it since.

You do not have to turn off 2-step verification. The simple solution is to obtain an application-specific password that you will use once to apply for Mail. Use the helpful steps as posted here by Cheesesilk:

Here it is! I finally fixed the issue! I've literally tried everything and this is what i did! I downloaded the Gmail App and setup my email account. After that, i went back to a regular pre-installed Iphone mail app and added my Gmail account information and it worked. Basically, the app Gmail app from the Apple store somehow pushed the signal to Gmail, saying Here it is, it is working account.

I've spent about 3 days to figure out what was the problem, tried everything on the net, 2-step verification, Google display capture, deleting account and setting it up again, changing the password on Gmail account. I was going nuts! And i know there are so many people out there who are also having the same issue. They get this crazy message "Cannot Get Mail - The user name or password for 'Gmail' is incorrect." It was so annoying. I hated it!

The solution to this problem is: Go to App Store on your Ipad or Iphone and search for "Gmail". Download the first one, Free version, install it and setup an email account with your existing credentials, the ones that didn't work earlier, and to your surprise, it will allow you to add your account back.

I just finished manually moving stuff to a new mac and I was having issues getting gmail hooked up again. Your post was the answer. I made sure the password was correct in the system preferences window, then opened Keychain Access and sure enough, the passwords weren't synched up. Changing the one to match the other fixed the problem immediately. Thanks for the great tip!

You have to try the application-specfic password - an other function of gmail account to access your gmail account on iphone. Try it here : -How-to-access-gmail-account-after-enable-2- Steps-Verification

I had the same issue so I deleted the account from the iPhone then reenable the account. I am using SMTP and dissabled POP. I then created a application-specific passwords using the two step process and all worked fine!

I had this problem and solved it by going to Settings, Mail (etc), Accounts. Tap on the gmail account. Then tap the account on the screen. Then select the SMTP Gmail SMTP Server. On the next screen turn on the smtp.gmail.com selection under OTHER SMTP SERVERS. Input the gmail password. this worked for me.

This simply means that you must provide two ways of verifying your identity when logging in to ESU Google services. Going forward your username and password will be known as your Hornet Login. The first way to validate or "factor" is your password. The second "factor" is using your smartphone or the Gmail app you've installed on your smartphone. When you log in to Google services, you'll enter your password as you normally do, then when you'll go to your smartphone and click "OK" in the Gmail app (or get a code from a text message if you don't have the Gmail app). This will allow you to finish logging in.

If you haven't installed the Gmail app from your device's app store, you'll likely want to do so. Do not use the Apple email client, use the Google Gmail app. If you install the Gmail app, your verification prompt will show up via the app after you've logged in the first time. If not, you can continue to get text messages with the verification codes.

Enroll - To enroll means sign up for. While we will enable Duo or Google MFA for you, you'll have to take the final step to "Enroll" or activate the process. Note that in the fall on the dates indicated above we'll automatically enroll you.

Multi-factor Authentication - aka MFA. This is a term that refers to having multiple ways of verifying you are who you claim to be when logging in to a computer system. One "factor" is your password, a second may be a text sent to you or a push sent to your phone via the Duo Mobile app.

If you are not enrolled by October 4, you will not be able to access your Google Workspace account, nor will you be able to access Canvas, LinkedIn Learning, and many other services that require Google authentication. You will need to call the Service Desk (940-898-3971) for assistance if you do not enroll by the deadline. Please enroll by the deadline to avoid any access issues.
