720 Area Code

TheCalifornia Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) today reminded consumers that the new 350 area code will soon be available in the existing 209 area code region. With new telephone numbers in the 209 area code region in high demand, the CPUC in May 2022 approved adding a new 350 area code to overlay the existing 209 area code region.

Beginning November 28, 2022, customers in the 209 area code overlay region may be assigned a number in the new 350 area code when they request new service or an additional line. Customers receiving a 350 area code will be required to dial 1 + the area code and phone number for all local calls, just as customers with telephone numbers from the 209 area code do today.

Customers should continue to identify their telephone number as a 10-digit number (3-digit area code + 7-digit telephone number) and include the area code when giving the number to friends, family, business associates, and others. Customers should ensure their websites, personal and business stationery and printed checks, advertising materials, contact information, and personal or pet ID tags include the area code.

Customers should ensure that all services, automatic dialing equipment, or other types of equipment recognize the new 350 area code as a valid area code and should continue to store or program telephone numbers as 10-digit numbers. Some examples include but are not limited to: stored telephone numbers in contact lists in wireless or cordless phones, PBXs, fax machines, Internet dial-up numbers, speed dialers, call forwarding settings, voicemail services, medical alert devices, safety alarm security systems and gates, ankle monitors, and/or other similar equipment.

On January 1, 1947, the first North American area codes were issued in regions where standard 7 digit dialing codes were scheduled to be exhaused the soonest. By adding a 3 digit prefix to a 7 digit local number, this allowed for hundreds of millons of new phone numbers to be issued. The North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA) is reponsible for further divisions or adjustments to current area codes.

To ensure new telephone numbers are available, the Tennessee Public Utility Commission approved the addition of the new 729 area code to the geographic region served by the 423 area code. This process is known as an area code overlay.

An overlay is the addition of another area code (729) to the same geographic region as an existing area code (423). An overlay does not require customers to change their existing area code but does require using a new dialing procedure to complete calls.

Anyone with a 423 area code will be affected. The 423 area code covers two non-contiguous regions in eastern Tennessee, serving communities such as Chattanooga, Bristol, Johnson City and Kingsport, as well as many other smaller communities. The new 729 area code will serve the same geographic region currently served by

the existing 423 area code.

All calls in the 423 area code that are currently dialed with seven digits will need to be dialed using the area code + 7-digit telephone number. The same dialing procedure will apply to telephone numbers that are assigned in

the new 729 area code.

Effective August 5, 2024, dial the area code + telephone number whenever you place a call, including calls within your

same area code. If you forget and dial just seven digits, your call will still be completed. Beginning February 5, 2025, you must dial the area code + telephone number on all calls, including calls within your same area code. On and after this date, if you do not dial the area code + telephone number, your call will not be completed, and a recording will instruct you to hang up and dial again, including the area code.

Beginning March 5, 2025, new telephone lines or services may be assigned numbers with the new 729 area code. If you have a number in the new 729 area code, you must dial the area code + telephone number or the call will not complete.

State and county names included on the file provide initial help in locating census tracts of interest (all census tracts are nested within counties). Errata: On July 3, 2019, the Rural-Urban Commuting Area (RUCA) Codes data product was revised to correct a programming error affecting the 2010 secondary RUCA codes. The revision corrects the secondary codes of 10,909 of 74,002 census tracts. Secondary RUCA codes may be used to classify census tracts into rural and urban categories. The revised secondary codes result in an increase in the number of census tracts classified as rural. The 2010 primary RUCA codes were not affected by this revision.

Springfield, IL - The Illinois Commerce Commission is announcing the addition of a 464 area code to south suburban counties presently served by the 708 area code. The 464 area code will "overlay" the existing territory in order to supplement the telephone number supply. The 464 area code will be available for assignment only when all assignable prefixes in the 708 have been exhausted which is not expected to occur until January of 2022.

The 708 area code serves most of western and southern Cook County and eastern and southern Will County including cities and communities such as Alsip, Beecher, Bellwood, Berwyn, Blue Island, Bridgeview, Broadview, Burbank, Calumet City, Chicago Heights, Chicago Ridge, Country Club Hills, Crest Hill, Crete, Dolton, Elmwood Park, Evergreen Park, Flossmoor, Forest Park, Glenwood, Harvey, Harwood Heights, Hazel Crest, Hickory Hills, Homewood, Justice, La Grange, Lansing, Lyons, Markham, Matteson, Maywood, Melrose Park, Midlothian, Mokena, Norridge, Northlake, Oak Forest, Oak Lawn, Oak Park, Orland Park, Palos Hills, Palos Park, Park Forest, Richton Park, River Forest, River Grove, Riverdale, South Holland, Steger, Tinley Park, Westchester, Western Springs and Worth.

History of the New Overlay

The Illinois Commerce Commission on June 30, 1999 approved an all-services overlay over 708. Conservation efforts put into place, such as number pooling and Commission review of numbering requests forestalled the need for a new area code until now.

How an Overlay Area Code Works

With an overlay, an additional area code is added to the same geographic area as the existing area code, with all current phone customers retaining the original area code. The 464 area code will be assigned to new customers requesting local phone service, cellular and paging services, and alarms.

With the new 464 area code, current 708 area customers will keep their numbers. The new area code is being introduced so that the numbering administrator will have a continuing supply of prefixes and blocks to assign to new and growing telecommunications service providers. Consumers seeking additional telephone lines will, in most cases, continue to be able to receive 708 telephone numbers, even after the 464 area code is in service.

The FCC requires that all telephone calls made in the 708 overlay area be completed by dialing 1 + 10-digit number (1 + area code + seven digit number). The change does not raise the cost of the call. A local call will remain a local call, and a toll call will remain a toll call, regardless of the number of digits that are dialed to complete it.
