A reminder of another earn-your-turns opportunity locally. Note the network of old downhill trails at the bottom, south of Rt. 9 and bordering Mt. Olga/Molly Stark S.P. Much like the management of Dutch Hill, there is a multi-use strategy being employed.

Nice one! Thanks for this.

Ron,

How much new snow are you looking at?

Hi Phil,

I took a quick survey of snow *depths* around my development, in plots ranging from open lawn to in the woods, and I found depths ranging from 8 to 12 inches. The wide range is due to high winds causing a lot of drifting. I'm going to say the average is on the high side of 10+ inches of snow depth. I don't know what the exact amount of *snowfall* is. The closest NWS report to where I am was in downtown Beacon with 11 inches of snowfall reported at 7am.

The snow here is definitely moist and dense. Great for snowball fights. It's dense, heavy stuff. 8 to 10 inches of it on top of a slushy, compressed base.

To the west of where I am, near Patterson and Brewster, NY there are reports of 14+ inches of snowfall as of 10:30am this morning (at Poughquag and Hopewell Junction.

In Lower Westchester County and down into NYC, they're reporting 18 to 20 inches of snowfall.

The highest snowfall report so far in the Catskills was down by Platte Clove and Indian Head Mt at the eastern end of the Devil's Path, with 14.5 inches reported at 7am.

NY Mesonet doesn't show snowfall totals, but it does show liquid equivalent precipitation totals. It looks like the most water (of whatever kind) that's fallen in NY State is around NYC and Long Island, the eastern end of Putnam County (Brewster, NY), and the eastern Catskills.

Thanks Ron. Drier snow up around my neck of the woods, but depths are less. Much drifting here as well and hard to gauge the actual snowfall total.

I guess this is a contrast between quantity and quality. I need to get up to Dutch Hill to ski it in good conditions again. I'm in the mood for some mellow, laid-back backcountry skiing.

Here, I went out into the backyard and laid some tracks for myself, using my big Vector BC skis. I'm looking forward to getting out on skinnier skis now that I have a packed lane to ski. We don't have a huge base, unfortunately. It looks like about 8 inches or so. It's dense, but I think it won't cover the rocks out in the woods.

Along the coast got hammered. I just saw that Providence RI got 36 inches as of 4pm. Some places on Long Island got 30 inches. My goodness!

3 feet! Wow! It's probably like wet cement though. This has been the winter for using my grandfather's 100 y.o. skis. Dry, deep, soft snow with long straight run outs. Those skis were made for these conditions. Just used them today. I needed a steeper angle than I had for the depth of the snow, but one thing is obvious, those tips would never submarine. Too much early rise. Shane McConkey didn't need water skis to get inspired about rockered skis. All he needed to do was look at a pair of antiques. I will grant that he made skis that actually can turn in powder which ain't these.
