About this time last winter I was gearing up for an ascent of Mt. Katahdin. That trip involved a five+ day commitment in time between the long drive, the ski in, the climb, the ski out and the drive home. I began thinking I'd like to spend this winter doing something I haven't had a chance to do since '75 and ski western pow. So I was planning a trip out to Utah. I even started discussing the idea with my roommate at the AP Env. Sci. exam reading in Cincinnati last June (U.Utah in S.L.C.). It seemed like a go until I bought a new (to me) vehicle this summer to replace my venerable Soob. I wondered if Utah could wait. There are a few places in N.E. that I have had my eyes on for a long time thanks to a dog-eared copy of Dave Goodman's Backcountry Ski Guide, among other sources. So my plan has shifted to more local targets for the upcoming Feb. school vaca.

Here's the itinerary, roughly speaking: Sun evening 2/17 ADK Loj parking lot. Mon 2/18 Wright Peak Ski Trail, Whale's Tale Ski Trail, Phelps Mt. glades then drive to Stowe and an overnight in the Mt. Mansfield parking lot. Tue 2/19 Stowe's old CCC trails now incorporated into their trail network e.g. Nose Dive, Chin Clip, Perry Merrill then over to the backside to ski the Teardrop, then back over to ski the Steeple then out to the truck and a drive to Codding Hollow Rd. and Davis Neighborhood Trail and up to Corliss Camp on the L.T. Wed. 2/20 Ski the woods on the side of Laraway Mt. then out and over to Jay Pass and, if enough of the day remains, an ascent of the LT and Jay-Big Jay herd path and descent of the Big Jay chutes and back to the pass for the night (the Big Jay plan might get delayed until the following a.m.) Thur 2/21 Drive to Twin Mt. NH and an ascent of the Firewarden's trail on Mt. Hale. Ski the high elevation birch glades there. Descend and drive to Pinkham Notch Camp parking lot and do something with whatever time remains (Sherby?) Fri 2/22 Kinda TBD but perhaps Gulf of Slides trail and/or Mt. Doublehead or Rumford Whitecap. Guess I'll play that by ear. Then home.

If anyone wants to hook up for any part of this let me know. plussier[at]whitneyacres[dot]com I expect to be off-schedule almost immediately. Only Jonathan S. could keep up an insane level of climbing and descending like this (and probably not even break a sweat). I'll report back when I've got some stories to tell.

Sounds like quite the itinerary!
Just hope you have enough snow for all that...

Closer to home, when standing at the top of Berkshire East, and looking in the direction of the Mohawk trail, you see an open field in the distance.
Someone told me today that these two hills over there have lots of trails suitable for ski touring:
Anyone here poked around on them?

(And Phil, let me know if you want to meet up for a Mt W Cog ski Feb 22 a.m. or Feb 23&24 p.m.-- family ski trip to the Mt Washington Hotel, and those are my babysitting slots for ski touring: http://tinyurl.com/2012MtWnapski  Otherwise will be skate skiing with the "training weight" on my back.)

Jonathan,
That's the Charlemont Trail system (find it on Facebook), built by
MTBs but probably good skiing as well, I'm usually breathing to
hard when I ride them to think about skiing. Go to the Warfield
House, head out of th parking lot and you'll find all sorts of trails,
wide logging roads, narrow twisty single track (not laid out for
skiers but skiable) and some glades, but watch out for the sap
tubing! Thos efields you see are probably not steep enough for the
currrent snow load, but could be fun when frozen w a little fluff on
top!
