I did a solo trip to the Glen on thursday March 26. Got Monikas blessing (more like hes going to do what hes going to do, so why fight it). Drove up from south central PA 8 hours on Wednesday. It looked like it would be dust on crust every day this week except Thursday, when temps would rise enough to create spring conditions up at 3000+ feet. Started from the parking at the end of Kelly stand rd west of Stratton at 9:30. I have pictures and a video, but cant seem to get them from my phone on to here. Anyway, the main corridor of that snowmobile trail heading west was fully covered, although all trails are officially closed at this point. Proceeded south on a secondary snowmobile trail which had alot of open spots and collapsing snow bridges. Also, my climbing skins started failing. Discouraging start but the coverage in the woods seemed good with firm base and a little mush on top. At one point I just packed the skins away and proceeded somehow on my k2 telemark skis just doing big traverses. Bushwacked awhile, then hit another snowmobile trail and finally got there. Great surface conditions. Corn snow probably as good as any groomed area. 2 to 3 foot base most areas, although big tree wells and hobblebush popping up in many places. The drainages on the north slope still had lines that were do able, although there were limited choices. The snow was well preserved in the lower pockets. The lines that were available were really nice. Lots of yo yo ing. Probably about 10 short runs and alot of whacking around trying to find the lines. The conditions were fast, even though the snow surface was soft. Somehow instinct favored parallel turns, but had alot of fun. Even hit a couple terrain features.
Very worthwhile the drive and long slog ( if youre obsessed like me, anyway ). Monika and I will be coming back to North Conway for a couple weeks in April. Hopefully there will be good skiing somewhere in New England.
