Hard to believe but we had a nice spring skiing run on
the Yankee Doodle today. Bill and I did some scouting on
the "snow fields" above the top of the ski area (Dutch Hill
itself is several hundred feet higher than the top of the
ski area).
There is 0" of snow at the bottom stake, but the skin
track is good starting just beyond the boardwalk. We
went up the Legal Trail, which had a few bare spots, then
on the Dutchmans's Holiday we booted several
completely bare sections. Most of the logged areas are
bare. We left our skis on the Holiday and hiked nearly to
the summit, not realizing that there was more snow
above the bare area that we couldn't see. I don't think it
is worth the brushy stumpy hike, but you could have
skied down a ways from the very top, back into the
logged area.
The logged areas are full of 2 to 4 foot stumps,
hazardous skiing if your skis are below the snow surface.
Today you would have been skimming right along on the
corny top.
Windmill Woods and Liftline are nearly completely bare.
We hiked over to Yankee Doodle, still 12" of snow at the
upper stake. The top of the Dyke looked great, but we
skied YD which was also great. Firm base with the a nice
corn inch or so on top. The tree wells are pretty big and
the spruce section above the Connector Jct was spotty,
but the rest was great and Connector looked solidly
covered as well. YD below the legal trail looked spotty so
we skied the LT to the Meadows, which worked almost to
the bottom.
Several days of rain coming so I think unless you like
skiing in the rain it is going to be gone by the next sunny
day.
Remember to send an email to
in...@dhash4vt.org so you
can be on the mailing list for work days in the fall. We
are hoping to start work on a new summit trail next fall.
Attached are (I hope) pictures of the skin track, the bare
Dutchman's Holiday, the upper snow fields, the top of the
Dyke and Bill on the Yankee and Meadows.
