Changing the type of particles in the simulation

I am attempting to create a custom updater that changes the particle type once the particle reaches a certain point; however, my attempts have been unsuccessful. All my updater does currently is access the snapshot and change the typeid of the chosen particles, which seems like it would be a solution, but this is not working when I run the sim. Is there anything else I need to add in order to successfully change a particle's type?

For help with a specific piece of code, please share a minimal working example that demonstrates the problem and state the output you expect from the code.
