翻訳依頼内容:

"I’m working on my graduation project for uni and I have interview transcripts for 8 people that I need translated from English to Japanese.

It’s casual conversational English, so there is some nuance and deeper topics but it’s mostly pretty light in terms of difficulty.

All in all, it’s about 55-60 pages totaling somewhere around 30,000 words, maybe a bit more.

There’s two caveats however: I need it completed within the next 3 weeks, 4 weeks at the absolute latest. I’m also a uni student so I can’t offer you a huge amount of money. Preferably around $200, but up for some negotiation."

Two-thirds of a cent per English word… unless the translator is extremely fast, they are going to make less than the Japanese minimum wage at that rate.

 

Maybe you should tell your friend what the market rates for translators are – that way they can either propose a realistic price, or think of a realistic way to stay within the budget.

Joe is absolutely right. Please understand that translators are professional writers who must make enough to earn a living. You are requesting someone with at least a university degree, and most likely one or more graduate degrees, to spend about a week simply to make $200. That will not put food on the table. In addition, typing Japanese on a computer takes about twice as long as typing English because of all the homonyms in Japanese that must be converted to the appropriate combinations of Chinese characters.

You wrote that you are a university student. Does your university have a Japanese language department? Try contacting one of the professors. Are there any native Japanese grad students at your university who might be willing to work with you in a joint effort to complete the project? Please understand that the result may not be professional, but it might allow you to remain within your budget.

Alternatively, the Japan Association of Translators has a Job Board where people can post job offers. Go to https://jat.org/translators and click the "Post a Job" button on the upper right.  You may be lucky enough to find a translator who is sympathetic to your situation and will respond, but considering the current situation with the pandemic, etc., I wouldn't count on it.
