「重要文化財」の英訳

みなさん、こんにちは！

文化庁が「文化財の多言語解説案内板の制作指針」を改訂し、
「重要文化財」の英訳を従来の「an Important Cultural Property」から
「a National Important Cultural Property」に変更するそうです。

「国による指定・登録であることの明確化を促す」ために、
「National」を追加するわけですが、
個人的には「Important」を最初に持ってきて、
「an Important National Cultural Property」にしたほうが
良いように思うのですがどうでしょうか。

面白い質問ですね。

もし国しか重要文化財を指定できなかったら、確かに Important National Cultural Property という語順が自然に聞こえます。しかし、ウィキペディアによりますと、都道府県や市町村も重要文化財を指定できるそうです（リンク）。

実際には、神奈川県指定重要文化財（リンク）や小田原市指定重要文化財（リンク）などがあります。英語では Prefectural Important Cultural Property（リンク）や City Important Cultural Property（リンク）などの使用例があります。

そう考えると、Important National Cultural Property よりも National Important Cultural Property のほうが適切ではないかと思います。

「a National Important Cultural Property」＝ important cultural
propertyのうち、nationalであるもの

「an Important National Cultural Property」＝ national cultural
propertyのうち、importantであるもの

という意味合いになるから、前者の方が「正しい」でしょう。

Quite correct. If I dip into the Google English n-grams data I see:

- National Important Cultural Property  - count 0

- Important National Cultural Property - count 54
