shades of brown

[Friedemann Horn]

I have a patent application here that discusses discoloration of
plastic materials. Some of the materials turn 茶色 and others
turn 褐色. Originally, I intended to go with "greenish brown" and "reddish
brown", but now the text talks about 茶褐色. To top it all off, there's also
黄褐色. I tried to pinpoint the colors with google images, but frankly,
they all look pretty much the same to me and 茶褐色 seems to be
all over the color chart.

Any thoughts/ideas? Might "medium brown" be appropriate for 茶褐色?

In addition these can be found in 研究社　新英和　（第7版）
茶色=Brown
褐色= sun-tunned (brown), reddish brown
黄褐色= Yellowish brown/ tan
茶褐色= Balckish brown/ dark brown/ liver-colored/ reddish-brown

I may be wrong, but I've always thought of "茶色" as being closer to "reddish brown" (lighter, warmer, imagine strong Keemun tea) and "褐色" being closer to black (imagine the dull and dark brown-black squares of a Spanish chessboard made of rosewood). Perhaps "茶褐色" is a generalization of both colors, and should be rendered simply as "brown".

I am interested in the accuracy of sun-tunned here. "Your Dictionary.com"
gives "to put in a cask or store" for tun as a verb, and I don't see any
references to sun-tunned on the net other than for Nippon Paint, which you
reference. This gives me pause, as I wonder if it might in fact be an
encrusted relic of a typo for sun-tanned.

I say this without any expertise in the area, but some input would be
helpful.

I never doubted it as a misprint for "sun-tanned" and also read
茶褐色= Balckish brown automatically as brackish brown.

I doubt it, as "bark" doesn't have a "c", and "barck" seems to be
represented only by personal names, but I may be wrong.

EUdict glosses it as 黒褐色and offers quite a few additional browns.

茶色 = light brown, tawny
褐色 = brown
茶褐色 = dark reddish brown, liver color
黄褐色 = yellowish-brown
