Hi,

Does anybody know (as opposed to think/have searched) the pronunciation of the name 'Bagehot' in the Columbia
program called the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship? WSe're simply trying to put it into katakana for our records at the moment.

As an unusual English name it seems to be 'Bajit' but I don't want to guess what happened to it on the way to the States. TIA,

"Bajit" is how they pronounce it, too. See the university's promo
video for the program on YouTube (!):

And hear it about 10 times in the first 60 seconds

Carl@make it stop, make it stop, please make it stop!!!!

You have heard the proper pronunciation, but the name of the Fellowship's
namesake Walter Bagehot has evidently been rendered ウォルター・バジョット
in print in the past, in Japanese translations of his works. This appears on
his Japanese Wikipedia entry:
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%A6%E3%82%A9%E3%83%AB%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%E
3%83%BB%E3%83%90%E3%82%B8%E3%83%A7%E3%83%83%E3%83%88
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/ウォルター・バジョット

Someone trying to research the man in Japanese would presumably want to use
the existing transliteration of バジョット whether it is an accurate
rendering of the pronunciation or not.

By the way, even though the fellowship is at an American university, its
namesake Mr. Bagehot was British.

According to James Grant, editor of Grant's Interest Rate Observer,
the correct pronunciation is "Badge-oat" (from p28 of his recent book
Mr. Market Miscalculates).

The audio edition of the Economist has it as "Bajit" every week.

I realize you already have the answer, but the following website gives
the pronunciation for many English words and names, including Bagehot.

http://www.howjsay.com/index.php?word=Bagehot

The site gives BE pronunciations, with NAE alternatives also given for
many words.
