I would say that a production trial is what they do on a specific day, whereas
trial production refers to a stage.
We are in the stage of trial production (or production trials). The production
trial on Wednesday went well.
But they are pretty similar. I could imagine a production trial that lasted
a month, in which case it would be the same as trial production.
Also the subtle difference that "trial production" <could> refer to the things
produced, but "production trial" couldn't.

Maybe I could add that the simplest way to put it is that
"production trial" is a type of trial, and "trial production" is a
type of production.
Looking at it that way, I noticed 量産, which I usually
translate as "volume production". So maybe
"volume production trial"?

どうもありがとうございます。
確かにTrial productionは「試し生産」と言う感じです。
量産試作は部品、製品の試作品を量産方法と同じ工程、設備で作ると言う意味なの
で(volume, mass) production trialの方が適切だと思います。
