Hello Everyone,

I'm having a few problems because Windows 7 IME suddenly decided to default to full-width roman characters, whereas it used to default to half-width characters. I can't work out how it happened, or how to change it back. Can anyone help me?

Best regards,

Robin Boyd

Robin,
I've never had that problem, but at the far right of the language bar there is a tiny inverted triangle. If you click on that triangle it will give you some options in a pull-down menu, and the last one is "restore defaults." That might work. Otherwise, see if something is fishy in the "settings." Make sure you are using the proper keyboard, etc.

Hi, Robin.

Microsoft IME is good at getting stuck sometimes. It usually seems to be due to an accidental keypress that you can never, ever find a second time.

I think I got out of a similar situation using these steps:

1. Set your IME to hiragana input.
2. Type a capital A. For me, this would show a full-width A, with an underline under it indicating I could 変換 to something else.
3. 変換 the character to a half-width A.

This seemed to clear the problem for me. I have a Japanese keyboard, so I have a dedicated 変換 key. I don't know what key you would use to 変換 if you are on a western keyboard. The space bar might work, or it might not.

Good luck!

Robin,

It just occurred to me that when you paste Japanese into a partial English sentence, the IME defaults to the Japanese font (full width Roman characters) behind the pasted Japanese. You simply have to reset the font to your desired English font.

You may know where's the language settings are.
Go to your Microsoft IME Properties

In Properties for Microsoft IME:

AutoCorrect Tab
Full width/Half width characters
Choose Alphabet
from the right side choose 'always use Half-width'
Press OK
