My goolging was inconclusive, so may I confirm something with my
BrEng-speaking colleagues?
Do you say "baseball boots" for what we Americans call high-tops or
basketball shoes? (Or rather, did you say that before being corrupted
by American influences? <g>)
Here's photo link for your reference.

James,

This URL for Converse points to what they refer to as "baseball
boots," which are evidently the same the same thing as high-top
sneakers.

They are refered to as "basketball boots" in New Zealand if that is any
help. I have never heard the term "baseball boots".

In fact the first thing that jumped to mind when saw the words
"baseball boots" was the movie Baseketball from the creators of
Southpark <g>

I'm a Brit, and I've always referred to them (including the pair I
used to own) as "basketball boots" or "basketball shoes". I can't help
thinking that reference to baseball is a typo. It's hard to see anyone
having much success running the bases in shoes like that!

Another Brit, I always heard the Converse All Stars brand etc. described as
"basketball boots" in high school (i.e. around 20 years ago). However,
searching for "baseball boots" on google images now brings up pictures of
what I think of as basketball boots, and "converse baseball boots" gets
around 10x as many hits as "converse basketball boots" on UK Google...
perhaps the term has gained some currency?

That's an interesting finding. I wonder how it happened. Perhaps
someone thought it sounded more American, as James said. It seems
strange that "baseball boots" has gained currency, given that the
shoes are clearly unsuited for sports played on grass. I can testify
that it's no fun playing football (soccer) on grass in those things -
attempt a sudden change of direction and you're more than likely to
end up flat on your back!
