Dear all,

Another question: Does anyone know the English for 養成 when this word is used in the context of cement making? There is also a furnace called a セメント養成炉. I have found a few Googits, but nothing that has led me to an answer to what the appropriate English might be.

I am not certain of the exact equivalent of 養成, but I am pretty sure that
"cement kiln" is the equivalent of セメント養成炉.

Thanks, Alan. Since it is clearly not "baking" or "burning", perhaps something fairly vague like "treatment"/"treating" would work here? In one embodiment, the 養成 is done in during submersion of a test piece water, so it does appear to involve heat in every case.

「セメント養成炉」は「セメント焼成炉」のタイポという可能性が高いでしょう
（「ようせい」と「しょうせい」）。

この場合は、Alan Siegristさんが書かれているようにキルンということに
なります。ただし、「"セメント養生"」で検索すると「セメント養生用オー
トクレーブ」なんてものも出てきますから、キルンのことだと断定するのは
怖い気がします。

That does seem to be where Inokuchi-san's comment leads too, though 養生 appears to be more common for the curing of concrete than cement.

Time to flip a coin, but "curing" sounds like the best bet to me.

Yup, Buckeye Inokuchi's explanation must be the answer,
and it must have happened something like this...
養生 youjou = take care of one's health; curing (of concrete) [2o13.1-5]
was misread as ようせい
and then got miswritten as セメント養成 .
Or, alternatively, maybe we are dealing with
セメント妖精, the Cement Fairy, who is kind of like the

養生 is pronounced in Japanese as ようじょう and means, with reference to
cement/concrete or other similar materials, a solidifying process after
concrete is cast. It is normally believed that concrete takes about a week
to achieve its strength.

The term養生 originally meant recuperation of a person after sickness
treatment or surgery.
