Hi,

surely many of you are familiar with the concept of "holding pen".
(Explained, for example, here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pen_(enclosure)
http://www.wordwebonline.com/en/HOLDINGPEN )

For some odd reason, dictionaries that i can access from here have nothing
to report, except EIJIRO, where
留置所 is offered for "holding pen". However, according to the following
resources,
留置所 and 留置場 are about people and not cattle:
http://eow.alc.co.jp/留置所/UTF-8/
http://eow.alc.co.jp/留置場/UTF-8/
http://wkp.fresheye.com/wikipedia/留置場
http://www.excite.co.jp/dictionary/japanese/?search=留置場
http://kotobank.jp/word/留置場

So what is a holding pen for cattle (or other animals) called in Japanese?

TIA & regards: Hendrik

Hi again... thanks for the feedback...!

I get 肥育場, which is self-explanatory, and even 飼養場, which one could
use in _some_ cases, i.e., for example (and depending on context), if
家畜飼養場 was used to describe a cattle raising facility as a whole.
However, since feedlot refers to the whole operation (including buildings,
etc.) it is not a suitable term for holding pen, although it may, of
course, happen that someone uses a holding pen to feed their animals. ;-)

Ah, that sounds better than my preliminary "牛の囲い込み場" (i had sent the
draft away using "
牛の囲い込み場" but with the added comment that i did not know the proper
専門用語). I will supply your term in a follow-up message (the people
reading my text are knowledgeable about the topic, so i am not worried that
they won't understand what i am talking about). The context, by the way, is
"
八重山列島には、大雨の後で、過放牧する結果としての赤土流出をも、牛の囲い
込み場(すみません、専門用語がわかりません)から土と糞を流れるのをも見え
ます。"

Thank you both for the ideas!

Regards: Hendrik
