I hope it is ok to ask a question relating to Japanese language input on a computer with a US keyboad.
I've been using IME for a few years, switching to Japanese with half-width alphanumericinput, and using ctrl/cap- lock to activate automatic conversion of romaji to kana.
A few days ago this stopped working. Now when I use ctrl/caps-lock, IME switches to kana input, so what comes up corresponds to the kana on a Japanese keyboard.
Is there some way of switching this back?
I thought maybe uninstalling and reinstalling IME might solve the problem, but I can't find a way to uninstall. Microsoft IME does not show up in the list of programmes in the install/uninstall window. Using search (at start) also produces no results.

Edwin,

Sometimes Win7 does not shut down properly and funny things can happen to the IME. Move the language bar to the desktop (if it isn't there already). At the far right bottom of the language bar is a tiny pull down arrow. If you pull down the menu you can find two options that may solve your problem. One is "restore defaults and the other is "settings." First I would give those a try.

The IME gets installed by Windows when you go to control panel > region and language > keyboards and languages. Make sure you have the Microsoft IME keyboard selected for Japanese. One other available option is a Japanese keyboard. Perhaps you inadvertently installed that too, and somehow you managed to activate it, but like I said, the IME can start misbehaving for no apparent reason.

Usually restoring the defaults or adjusting the settings will solve the problem.

Hi Edwin

Ctrl+Shift+Cpasで、IMEのカナ入力とローマ字入力が切り替わりませんか?
私のPC(Windows 7+USキーボード)ではこの組み合わせでした。

Edwin,

Two possible solutions, sorry for the first one to be so trivial:

1. Did you try to set the IME back to hiragana mode by right clicking
on the input method, and doing the following two things: one, set the
input to hiragana. Two, under properties, set the input mode to
romaji.

2. You can also try Google's Japanese IME.

Thank you all very much!

I tried Kanji's suggestion (Ctrl+Shift+Caps). It worked. I used to get the same result with control + caps/lock, so I tried that again too. And it works again now. It seems to have been IME going wrong for some reason.

I appreciate the other suggestions, too. They may help me if IME has another fit some day. No response is too basic. Software problems sometimes turn me into a babbling idiot.

Edwin
