I realized I don't know how to say "step forward" (as opposed to "slide forward") in Japanese....

Kind of embarrassing (when my dojo leans on me for Japanese knowledge...).

そうですね。文脈と状況によっては一歩出して(こうする)、といった流れも想定できますね。

Warren,
My first instinct was similar to Herman's response, but in the case of Aikido, you often find expressions like "一歩一歩ほんの僅かだけど前へ進む," so I suspect "step forward" will be closer to "一歩 前へ進む" in the field of martial arts rather than a typical modern expression. Just as a curiosity, how does one say "slide forward"?
